Having just picked up a 16" Kenlowe as an upgrade over the 13" one which i had i was toying with being really brave and trying it with no viscous fan .Any one doing it already?
Hi Steve. I've been running without viscous fan for 2 years and don't miss it. It took me some time to adjust the setting for the Kenlowe fan but once set, it has been fine with no need to use the overiding switch. Hope this helps.
Gentlemen - without wishing to seem rude, but are you sucking or blowing?
Just measured the depth of my new 16" kenlowe and it is 100mm which i think would be too tight even if i remove the viscous coupling and find another shorter bolt.So its going to be a blow job for me i think. Also i can keep the viscousfan in the boot to start of with if i need to pop it back on .
Thats exactly what I've done with my Spitfire 1500, fitted a Davies Craig fan in front of the radiator, and carry the old engine fan in the boot just in case!
Not done it with the Stag as it has (had!) a new radiator and viscous coupling earlier this year and runs without any cooling issues in hot weather - that is until the fan punched a hole in the rad core when I had my accident!
The only issue I've noticed with the Spitfire since fitting the fan in the 'blow' position is a tendency for it to run a little warmer as the fan blocks the radiator,. Like your Stag, the clearance of the fan boss against the crank pully is marginal in the 'suck' position on my Spit.
When I first bought my stag it had an electric16 inch fan only, I hated it!
In traffic my temperature gauge would creep up, me hoping thefan would start. At night my lights would dim and my volt gauge plumet. I would then be relieved when the fan cuts out...only for it to repeat again a couple of minutes later.
The last straw for me was when the fan failed to cut out and I came back to the car with a flat battery one day after shopping.
I fitted a new machanical fan with viscous unit and the electric fan never came on again. I eventually removed the electric fan all together.
The worry of the electric fan failure, even a simple fuse blow, with no mechanical fan, and the potential engine overheat possibility is too much risk on such a delicate temperature sensitive engine!
I tend to agree. I've got a 16" blower fitted but only as a 'belt and braces' device and it probably reduces the efficiency of the radiator at other times. If the viscous coupling is doing its thing correctly (I wonder how many aren't), then the mechanical fan shifts a load more air than the electric fan. It has the benefit of constantly circulating air in the engine bay which helps to stop the ancilliaries frying and fuel lines vapourising etc. The benefits in terms of bhp gains from removing the mechanical fan are insignifcant - go for tubular manifolds and/or a holly instead. I wonder if a worthwhile modfication would be to remove/disable the viscous coupling - overcooling would be a nice problem to have!
If the viscous coupling is doing its thing correctly (I wonder how many aren't),
Quite agree, Bill. Since discovering this myself earlier this year I have made a point of checking every time I see under the bonnet of a Stag. Many are spinning freely, or more than they should, reducing their effectiveness.
Since fitting a new one, I am glad to hear that reassuring whirr and feel that rush of hot air on my leg when I stand beside the car with the engine running.

i am awaiting delivery of a 16" pacet fan as a blower this is to be the only cooling fan i did e-mail the company withmy wishes to run a stag with their fans managing director returned e-mail next day with recomendation and part number. so when she is on the rd i will find out. happy hunting
do not have mech fan. I always planned for just a electric fan. member down here in cornwall has just a twin pug fan which he switches on and off when he deems fit. we like to be diffrent in Kernow
