The bungs themselves get hardened/brittle over time, probably worth replacing them too unless they are recent. I got mine some time back from Burlen. If not there, probably
Rimmers.
only supplier I would use for these would be burlen.co.uk
Best thing would be to pretend it is 1991 and call them, they are super knowledgeable and helpful on the phone. you may need to replace the bung but to be honest I haven't yet broken an original. plenty of replacements but not the originals.
To remove there are 4 lugs, lube it all up with wd40 or what ever, then push one tang inwards and hold it in place with your thumb, then move another and hold it and then the 3rd etc. finally if it hasn't been out in decades I have found the need to gently pry it between the copper cap and the float chamber body with a flat blade screwdriver. any force greater than you might use to to run the same screwdriver blade behind your finger nails to extract dirt is too much

I have only been able to get them off is by removing the cover on the end and then bending the tabs on the plug as Richard said above. but then when you reassemble it the gasket leaks so best to replace that as well

why would you reuse a gasket?
