Really, it all depends on what you want. If you just want a Stag to enjoy and aren't too worried about details, then it may be worth a punt - it is relatively cheap. And as already recommended, get somebody who is experienced to give it the once over with you, but be sure you leave the rose tinted spectacles at home.

No claims about it being perfect ?

"...The hard top is in mint condition. The chrome work is very presentable with a nice shine to in."

He states the Hard top is in Mint condition, which it isn't as missing parts. And for the chrome, what is there might have a shine to it but can't be said for the chrome that is missing !
I'm just pointing out what needs to be rectified and for the OP to consider the consequential costs to add to his budget. Or use them as ammo for negotiating on the price.

What are we supposed to say (or not say ). "Yeah it's a fair car, at a fair price" and keep schtum, only for OP to possibly find it may become a money pit ?

Maybe the seller should have listed it as a rolling project car as it's not going to pass an MOT (exempt or not) or be roadworthy without the wipers and handbrake working.

He has just reduced the price by looks, £6950.

As I said, Ray, keep it factual, unemotive and without speculation and conjecture. It’s a cheap ish Stag and, at that price level of course it will have things to sort.

I can’t help but feel that the absence of people selling cars on this platform, where you would hope there would be cars for sale all the time, is a result of very negative feedback. Nobody has said, “oh the paint looks good” (as an example) or many, if any positive comments.

im here to moderate with a light touch and that’s exactly what I’m doing.

My Stag cost £16,000 in body work 16 years after a full ‘restoration’. And then I re-assembled the car myself. I used to own a Triumph restoration business. Any criticism of a Stag for sale has to bear the experience of the members of the SOC, however painful it may be. It’s surely best to pick fault with any car offered for sale - many sellers don’t know as much as we do and may be misled. I would prefer a potential Stag owner to enter into the glory of the best car in the world full of confidence that the example they are buying is everything it offers. Or fully aware of the pitfalls and choose accordingly.

I've already got a Range Rover Sport HSE V8TD although not quite a classic [18 years] old i could do with selling that to raise the funds for my first stag.
                  Is anyone interested?

Hi Steve, I'm in Essex and a bit too far away. While I admit to picking fault with it I didn't mean to put a downer on the idea. But as you rightly recognise in your initial post most of us buying a 50 year old car need as much help as we can get to assess its condition - for sure Goldstar would give informed advice.

I bought my first Stag around 1985 for peanuts, to be brutally honest is was only fit for the scrap yard as it had been very much abused and neglected. It took nearly 40 years to get it back on the road while life got in the way, I have probably spent four times more money than what it's now worth, and I don't know how many hundreds of hours work.

Some would think this ridiculous, but to paraphrase Richard, I got emotionally invested in it all and the more problems I found the more determined I was to get to the end. My mum used to bring tea and biscuits to the garage when I first started stripping it down, and I wish she was still here so that I could take her for a run. I never fulfilled the promise I made to do that. Daft, isn't it - I will never sell this car.

This blue car would be a far better starting point than mine, and at least you'll be able to drive it and enjoy sooner than I was !!!

I did use a guy a couple of times to move mine but that's over 12yrs back now. He did advertise in Practical classics in the back pages classifieds, IF he's still in business or on the same numbers -

Put your details into Shiply.com and companies will quote to secure the work. It can be a cheap way of doing things, especially if you can wait until they have a transporter in the area.
