    Aldon electronic ignition

Hi guys - I need some help!!

Bought a new Aldon electronic ignition system , and fitted it in fifteen minutes, having read all the threads on the subject, and noted all the do's and don'ts.
I wired the red wire direct to the positive side of the coil, and the black direct to the negative side of the coil.
The module fit very easily and looks 'right', and the centre magnetic pickup is pushed fully down on the spindle.
I have previously done away with the integral balast resist wire on my car, and the coil is a normal 12v coil. This ran the previous Lumenition with no problems.

There is no sign of a spark at the plugs.

The only thing that seems odd is that with the car set up at 12 degrees BTDC, the rotor is pointing at no. 5/6 plug caps on the dizzy cap ie: straight at you if you are standing looking at the dizzy from the passenger wing.

Anybody any ideas why it won't fire or even show a spark, as I have done 3 hours with my neighbour on it tonight, and have run out of things to try.
Any ideas would be much appreciated,
    Peter

Did you use both base plates supplied and did you replace the small earth cable that joins the two dizzy base plates?

      Hi Dave,
Yes I used both baseplates - very simple to fix on the face of it. There was no earth cable attached, and hasn't been over the last seven years that the lumenition has been fitted with no problems.
If you think it definitely needs one, I will fit one, but I assumed the baseplates will earth as some point to the dizzy or the block - I may be wrong!
      thanks for the quick reply

i think an earth tag is required, as the base plate is isolated buy the plastic or nylon washers
also why not rig up a simple test light to see if you have a spark

        one lead to battery positive
take lead off from petronix coil connection, negative on coil and connect to that
        turn ignition on
turn to see if light comes on
take out king lead from top of dizzy cap for safety

I think the guys are right Peter as the Lumenition would only have an optical sensor in the distributor and therefore unefected by the earth tag being missing, but the Pertronix instuctions say make sure it is fitted.

          Cheers Steve

The instructions that came with mine say "If the distributor ground wire was removed during the installation process be sure it is re-attached securely" Highlighted in red!

The earth wire is the bit of frayed black fluff in the top right of the dizzy in the pic here:

(I replaced it just after the pic was taken!)

Peter if you reread instructions you might find that you need to run the red wire from a switched supply from the fuse board as the ballast resistor wire will affect the starting.

                Hi guys,
Thanks for the replies - will fit an earth tag this afternoon, and see how it goes (or rather if it goes)
Can you advise where the earth wire is best secured after I have fitted it to the baseplates. I could route the wire through the grommet if necessary, and secure it to the chassis, unless someone has an easier option.
                Many thanks,
                Peter f

The body of the dizzy is earthed anyway, the earth wire just connects the upper 'insulated' baseplate to the lower base plate that is earthed anyway.

Sorry to hijack this thread, but I have a Pertronix ignitor, does any one know if they sell a spare "chopper" (black bit which pushes onto dizzy shaft)?

                    Cheers

Jason, try giving the UK-based distribution centre a call....... 01276 65554
I suspect they'll be able to help

I've recently fitted a petronics with no earth wire, no problem. What value of resistance does your coil measure. It should be 1.5 ohms or more although mine works at 1.35 ohms. Also mine came with a sticky label on the inside of the detector, nearest the magnet which I removed.Terry

Hi Pete, no probs with the aldon ignitor I fitted a few weeks back.

Rotor pointing at 5/6 might be yourproblem. Officially should be at 2, but actually theengine can be started with it pointing anywhere so long as the leads follow the firing order & the cylinder its pointing at is on compression stroke.

Let us know what you find.

Thanks for the info guys. I have fitted an earth from the top plate to the base of the dizzy, with no effect at all. I noted Terry's comment, and mine also hass a sticky label across the face of the curved 'detector'.
I can't see anything in the instructions, but should I remove it??
Also there is no sign whatever of a spark. Should the system still show a spark, even if the timing is 180 degrees out?
Again, any help would be gratefully received, as I am supposed to be going on the Socrates handover run to the Humber Bridge tomorrow.
