    Passed this year's Tenerife "MOT" at second attempt

    My local ITV (MOT) was due yesterday and I got a Garage I know to take it to the Testing Station for me. At first the Testing Station issued a Failure notice because it was dripping oil from around where the sump meets the bottom of the timing chain cover.
    My garage mechanic then took it back to his garage and sprayed some Silicon on it to temporarily stop the small leak, and when he went back to the Testing Station, because it was no longer dripping oil they passed it (everything else tested was O.K.).
    I was just wondering would such a leak be a cause of MOT failure in the U.K. or not?.
    I have always had a small leak from this area from the last time I fitted new Timing Chains and think I will have to put some more sealant around the join.
    After next years ITV (MOT) next May the Stag only needs to be tested once every 5 years instead of every year. Do not ask me to explain it but the Rules over here are that any car over 30 years old doesn't pay Road Tax, and when 35 years old only needs to be checked at a Testing Station every 5 years!
    Suits me as it will save me money, but I will personally check the car regularly rather than wait 5 years.

    Not sure about class 4 (Cars) in the uk, someone will know, but in my industry, Buses and Coaches it must not form a puddle larger than 75mm in 5 minutes at idle.

      Almost certainly not. My Land Rover has oil leaks from engine, transfer box, rear diff pinion seal, front swivels etc. In fact the only bit that doesn't leak is the main gearbox. At the last MOT last yearI even warned the tester to watch out when he went underneath as he was likely to get oil dripping on his head! He just laughed and said he was used to itThe only leaks i am aware of they don't like are ones from the power steering, brakes and the outer CV joint boots.

      A 75mm puddle in 5 minutes is a bit excessive for a leak and i'm not sprised its a failure on commercials - none of mine are that bad.

        that realy suprizes me that a car 35 years old is ok for 5years and a 3year old car needs a mot every year, wheres the lodgic in that?

          I thought it strange when I first heard about it, but it is true. It is on my Spanish registration book that the car must be tested every year until 2012, and then only every 5th year afterwards. Do not know if applies to other vehicles besides cars, but I do know that all Public Service vehicles (Buses, Taxis, etc.) have to be tested every 6 months regardless of age.

            I Love that Terry, an oil drip and its a fail!!

            In Qld they haveNO annual test whatso onANY car but if you sell a vehicle you have to have a safety certificate done and one of the fails is there must be NO oil leak's.:shock:

            Went to a local car show at the weekend and here is a genuine QLD plate for you, perhaps you could get one similar in tenerife.

              Love it! It has to be a Pom that owns it! I saw a ute (pick up)the other day with the plate PEN15.
