    Strange goings-on in the sump!

I have just removed the sump from the 73 auto and have found four ball bearings about 9-10m dia. I thought and have been told that there is no ball races in the engine so these look as if theyforeign bodies... Doesanyone any thoughts on this? I bought the car recently at a bankruptcy auction and wonder if the previous owner or some other scallywag has tried to ruin the engine by dropping these in; a theory only of course.....

They would just about fit down the dipstick tube, sheer bloody spite. :X Martin.

They can't do any harm there though, can they?
      The answer isn't 42, it's 1/137

I wouldn't have thought so - ignorant as well as spiteful then. Martin.

I wondered what damage they could have done if they popped in the oil filler cap andtinkled there way down to the sump?

They would be about 5-6mm if they are the ones from the water pump.(difficult to measure in the ballrace),but certainly not 10mm.

              Cheers Steve

Have rechecked and the bearings are definitely 10mm

No mate, they couldn't have got to the sump via the oil filler. Martin.

i'd have thought something could be dropped into the oil filler, fall down around the timing gear, to the leading edge of the sump, and then easily into the main body of the sump.

                    .........Andy

If Castrol can add 'Liquid Tungsten' to their oil surely it must be advantageous toadd small amounts of Chrome moly steel?
