    smiths fuel consumption guage

Whist at Beaulieu, bought myself a nice Smiths after fit fuel consumption guage(I dont want to know ,I know........).

I understand that the feed from this comes from the inlet manefold ,ie vacuum,My MK1 has its temp compensator cold starting aidflap thingy to the air intake filter box blocked off,I wondered if this would be a good place to take the feed from?

If not has anyone got any suggestions where I can take the feed from for my new gadget?

Nice to meet you Bob(Heritage),and nice Stag.

    Regards Mark

Is this an economy meter? these used to come with a replacement carb adaptor plate (I had one on a Herald I owned) that was tapped for a take-off, interesting gadget but not much use on twin carbs I suspect.

yes Ian it is a sort of economy meter, the needle just swings from left to right ,reading Fuel consumption POOR(LEFT SIDE) TO GOOD on the right side.

Why do you say no good for twin carbs?

      Thanks Mark

It sounds like it is basically a vacuum gauge, it indicates manifold depression, the higher the depression the more economical it is - basically because the throttle is not down as much! It can be useful for setting up the engine. It needs to be fed from the inlet manifold so taking it from the air intake is no good. You could "T" into the pipe going to the brake servo. failing that you will have to drill and tap and fit a small fitting into the manifold somewhere in a central position.

Anybody remember the RedX gauge? same thing. It gives you a clue as to how far down your right foot is - personally I can work that out for myself Martin.

Hi Mark, If you are talking about the small take off in the centre just in front of the carbs, then that is exactly what you need. Where the part number 614866a is screwed in. John

Masochist. I don't want to be reminded how quickly I am burning fuel (money)when I am enjoying myself.
