    Brakes

Brakes went a bit soft after a 5 mile stint on the motorway yesterday(sure they were ok before the run). Went to go home in the car much later, and they were softer. By the time I got home they were almost on the floor. Can't see any sign of leakage and the fluid resovoir still has plenty of fluid in it. Where do you think I should start?

Fluid leaking past the internal seal of the master cylinder comes to mind,...you may need this, LD parts...

Oh, and if they cost that much Sukh, I hope its not that! I never realised something like that would be so expensive.

You may have old brake fluid in there, and this can ansorb mositure which will easily boil and cause a spongy brake feel; also air may have got into it which will have a similar effect.

Unless you know the fluid has been changed (in which case just try bleeding off any air) I suggest you get a litre of brake fluid; flush the system with new fluidand bleed the brakes thoroughly.

Sounds good. I think I'll take the rear wheel hubs off first to see if there is anything amis and then go for your suggestion. Thanks.

sticky caliper causing overheating brakes and boiled fluid?

How are they after letting everything cool down?

Still on the floor. Certainly wasn't a caliper as the car didn't pull to one side but might be the rear that's why I'm going to have a look before I bleed them.

I would put my money on the master cylinder. I had a similar problem with a MKI Astra once. If you jabbed your foot quickly on the pedal you got some resistance, if you put your foot down slowly the pedal would just sink. It turned out to be a split seal in the master cylinder. There was no external leaks or fluid loss.

(Back then I drove it the 40 mile round trip to buy the new master cylinder - with one hand on the handbrake just in case :shock. Don't think I would do that now!

i'll try bleeding first cos I just bought 5 litres of fluid then a seal kit if that doesn't work. Does any one now if the master cylinder seals are the same for any other car? Might be quicker to get hold of if i can get them locally.

I have no personal experience but I gather that the seals are a bit of a pain to change. I believe there is a circlip deep inside somewhere that can be difficult to remove.

Too right, I gave up after 3 hours trying to get it out and bought a new master cylinder. Cost £££s but saved my sanity (well maybe:P).

Hi, I've fitted a master cylinder repair kit, there is a circlip at the end that's difficult to get at, I ground the tips of two long thin good quality screwdrivers to fit and it came out with minimum effort. The symptoms are a little odd, the pedal going a long way down suggests one circuit has failed, but that would show as a low level in the master reservoir, are you quite sure you can't pump the pedal to bring it up a bit ? if you stamp on the brakes, does the car's nose dip ? I think it's a fair bet that you'll find fluid in the drums, if you do, go for a pair of new cylinders, about £30. Good luck, Martin.

It was the master cylinder .... You can get a repair kit or replace choice is yours
