    Timing chain advice

Guyswhen i bought my car a couple of years ago,I was told by the owner who had it only 2 weeks that the engine had been rebuilt by the previous owner. As there were no receipts or invoices i took this with a pinch of salt. thecar had not been driven on the road since 1986 judging from the tax disc and rust.

Anyway strippedthe timing covers off to replace the chains with a Wards kit only to find what looks like a very new kit. Including chain guides / cogs / renold tensioners and chains of unknown make. Tensioners have no sign of wear on the rubbers.

SO do i replace them. or leave well alone.

Me? I'd replace them. Unless you do, you cannot be certain of the provenance of the old ones, however good they look. They may have been cheap ones to begin with too.

    But it's up to you...

Peace of mind versus a couple of hundred pounds,.. which would you take ?.( IMO)

              Sukh.
P.s Have to admit though they (timing gear) look good, any markings/notches on the chains visible?

Nothing sukh and very little movement when i try to lift a chain from the sprockets. Rubbers on tesioners dont have any score marks that i can see either.

There's your answer, the job was bodged.

In that case it would probably be prudent to check and make sure you don't have any of the rogue sprockets with the mounting holes in the wrong place while you are at it!

Whose chains do Ward's use, are they any better/worse than the chains already fitted? I would have a chat with Peter Howells of LD Parts who supplies top quality IWIS chains, he will give good unbiased advice.

I would also check the water pump to make sure that has not been replaced with a poor quality one. Sorry to raise more questions than answers.

I have to go with Dave (stagnjag) here, the job was at least partially bodged and not worth the risk. My chains were fitted by Wards in 2003, they did them again last year after 43.000 miles, and reckoned the were good for another 10.000, good quality oil and filter every 3.000 on the dot. Can't see much wrong with that ! Martin.
