    Seat Belt Warning Light

Having refitted my seats in the car I am a little confused how the seat belt warning light should work when only the driver is present.

Firstly when I recovered my seats etc I noticed only the passenger seat has a seat switch fitted to the diaphram. I made sure this is connected again.

When I am in the drivers seat the warning light is on (OK)

When I plug in my seatbelt, light stays on(Would expect it to go off)

If I plug in the passenger seatbelt, the light goes off.

Whilst writing this mail it sounds to me like the passenger seat switch is permantly on.

Can anyone tell me if my aasumptions of how this should work is correct or not?

Off to check the switch operation with a meter

Sounds like the wiring to the seat belt buckles is the wrong way round. Try looking under the covering box that the seat belt buckles emerge from and swapping the wires at their connectors. I think the cover is held by a screw under the rear ashtray.

I don't think there's supposed to be a driver's seat switch, the assumption is that if the car is going to be driven then there's someone in the seat

Steve, Just been thinking about this again, I'm not sure if you mean ..plug in the passenger seatbelt as well.. I assumed in my first reply that you meant ..plug in the passenger seatbelt instead..

If you didn't try the passenger belt on its own that might help you work out whats happening, though as you say if the seat switch is on then you will need both belts in to put out the light.

If I plug in the passenger seatbelt then you are correct the light goes off and remains off regardless if the drivers belt is in or not.

So you recommendation of switching the connectors would actually work but then I dont see where the passenger seat diaphram switch comes into play.

Using a wire I shorted the above switch out and it made absolutely no diffrence to the lamp so I am a bit confused how thsi should work.

Hi Steve , I think the problem is with the passenger seat sensor. The switch will be faulty behaving as if there is a passenger in the seat all the time. When the passenger belt is fastened it bi- passes the seat sensor, switching off the light. The drivers seat belt switch will have no effect on the light because the system believes that you have a passenger who has not fastened the seat belt. The seat switch needs open circuiting not shorting out ,Terry

What happens if you disconnect the passenger seat pressure switch and then try each belt in turn?

If the passenger seat switch is permanently on, which your bit of wire suggests might be the case, then the fact that the warning light goes out with only the pass seatbelt in suggests that there is a fault in the drivers belt circuit as well:X

I will take the cover off the centre column and try and work this one out the weekend. THis is odd as it was working before I started to fit the new carpets and seat covers.

              Thanks for the advice

Are you sure about this John. I think triumph assumed that The stags ignition would be on only if the was someone in the drivers seat.
                1. Driver only, no driver's seat detector so operating seat belt puts light out.
                2. Driver and passenger, circuit is closed by passenger seat detector so light circuit is on until it is open circuited by drivers seat belt and passenger seat belt. Terry

Turned out to be that the Driver Side seatbelt switch is not working it has failed open circuit. Normally these switches are closed by default. Thanks for the advice.
