Not much help really as I haven't got a parts book forthe PI's
Have you thought about fitting the TR7 5 Speed box, I was led to believe this will fit but you have to machine or is it ream the inside of the bell housing for the clutch to fit. I think from what I have been told this is the same box that was used on the Rover 3500SD1.

I had a 2500tc engine fitted to mine when i firstgot it, when i swapped back to TV8 power i had to swap the box as well due to the input shaft of the 2500 box being shorter and having different sizedspines
Didn't take much notice of the bell housing but the starter is on the opposite side

One other possibility is that because Stag boxes have roller bearing thrust washers, the gap between the thrust washer mounting faces is different, or it may be the difference is in the layshaft cluster. I know they are different thicknesses because I had a broken roller thrust washer that I could not replace, and had to use two plain washers with one ground down to produce the correct end float. It was on the small thrust washer end which I presume only gets thrust on the overrun, and seems to have worked OK
