How hot does the ballast resistor get?

I'm having to fit one to my mk2 to replace the melted ballast resistor wire and was thinking of mounting it with my coil on the bulkhead but just a bit worried about it melting the rubber sound deadening pad

Hi Stu,
Had trouble with my Lumenition, and the built-in ballast resistance wire had melted like yours. An auto electrician pal came and did away with the ballast resist, fitted a l2 volt coil, and I have just removed the Lumenition and fitted an Aldon Igniter (see separate thread on this item if interested).
All working very well, and the igniter is hidden in the dizzy, and has only two wires to the coil to fit.
The way to go IMHO

The ballast wire was already melted before purchase it's just one of those things on the listi have have got round to doing while sorting out why battery doesn't hold charge, i already had the ballast resistor so will fit it for the time being, the aldon igniter is on my list but in the "when funds allow" column

The ballast resistor can get quite hot, I had spilled a drop of oil on the one fitted to the estate, and it started smoking while it was running:shock:

I dont know where they were fitted to the stag, but on the small triumphs they were bolted to the cylinder block next to the coil. I wouldnt risk bolting it to the rubber pad
