    Kenlowe or not to Kenlowe

Well the warm weather is what the cars were made for, and i just love driving it, its so much more fun than a modern car , however i have noticed after replacing the distributer (with lumenition) with a brand new distibuter points and all cheching the timing which was almost a full quarter out ???? that in the heat of the day Friday and Yesterday (27 deg C :P:P:Proof off and loving it) the temerature gague wavered uncomfotably to the later part of the M :?.

So i think an after market fan is required. the car runs great and on cool days the temp gauage reads between the E & M, but on days like 27 deg and how many bloody sets of traffic lights in Liverpool, and how many cars and how impatient are people (the sun hs a very adverse effect), i think the old girl requires some additional cooling.

is Kenlowe the way to go?? and could one of you fine people please post a picture so i can see where to install a unit to the car.

PS. the car is so much fun but my wife and kids think i am in need of a white coat with long arms.

    any assitance greatly appreciated.

    Hi Rob.

When was the cooling system last flushed out? Have you removed the radiator and also the block drain plugs, thermostat and thoroughly flushed the system. Although I now have a Kenlowe as a back up, it almost never comes on. I believe that they only disguise a problem, not cure it.

To confuse matters, some 'will-fit' temperature sensors read high. LD Parts sell one that will give a vertical needle at 90 degrees.

Second Dave's comments. Flush the system out. Recheck your timing, or you have a problem ready to explode. Don't cover it up with a fan, cure it instead. By all means fit a Kenlow or similar as a back-up.

        Rob..
Rob, are you sure the timing was so far out? The timing mark on the crankshaft pulley can "slip" as there is a band of rubber type material in the pulley.

I suggest you pull the No. 2 spark plug and physically check TDC on the engine using a probein the sparkplug hole. Mark the pulley at TDC and then use a protractor to measure 12 deg BTDC and remark the pulley. Set your timing to this mark. A cooling system flush as previously suggested is a "must do" also.

        Cheers,,

have u checked your viscous coupling?,if it turns freely it is shot ,u need to feel a healthy resistance when turning by hand !!! reguards Graham

Thats a useful indication but I also like to rev the engine and feel/hear a good amount of air coming from the fan.

              Hi Dave,

The radiator was changed Sept 09, coolant was changed Sept 09, changed the dizzy April 10, engine when in heavy traffic i.e. lots of lights stopping and starting and high temp 27deg c Saturday the guage went to the M, running at speed, cools down to between the E & M.

took the old dizzy out fitted the new, had a go at the timing, but as i said it was about a quarter out, so took the dizzy back out, turned one quarter, checked with strobe light set on plug No.2 and got it on the centre point.

so from here where do i go?? which way should the timing be set back or forward??

              Rob..

I personally don't think you have a cooling problem. If it doesn't go into the red (or near it)

But, for piece of mind you could fit a kenlowe fan. I have a 16" running off a rovotec inline sensor in the top hose. The sensor is adustable between 70 degrees and 120 degrees (or there abouts)

Unless I've misunderstood your reply Rob. The timing should be 12deg before TDC on No.2
