    Yet another cooling problem!

I was driving along the M25 yesterday - keeping up with the free flowing traffic and noticed that the temp gauge was well into the 'M' of TEMP, much higher than usual. Kenlowe fitted but not working at the moment! Idling and in traffic I have no problems at all.

I slowed up and came off the motorway and it settled down to normal again. The engine was rebuilt a couple of thousand miles ago so it won't be full of crud, the viscous coupling was ok last time I checked it. Anyone have any immediate thoughts. I am thinking faulty thermostat or blocked rad. I ran a hose through it 12 months or so ago and there didn't seem to be a restriction in flow.

any thoughts? I am off to France in it in a couple of weeks and i really don't want cooling system problems!

    Cheers Dave

sounds like a blocked rad? Have you just fitted the kenlowe?, maybe it restricts air flow a bit a high speed and so just runs a bit hotter? and it was very hot this weekend - just a thought

      Hi Giles,

The kenlowe has been fitted to the car since I bought it. I suspect that it was disconnected when the engine was replaced. I don't see it as being the cause of the problem. I will try and resurrect it when it cools down outside a bit! 27 deg C here at the mo.

      Cheers

      Dave

        Hi Dave,

Just my thoughts, it is exceptionally hot this weekend, If I push my old lady along at 70+ it does run that little bit hotter and like you said one if I slow things down a bit it goes back to where it normally sits. Normal for mine is about a 1/4 if things warm up a bit or I push it like when drove back from Rye it goes between the 1/4 & 1/3rd on the gauge. the other thing to do is have the heater valve open if you can put up with it, I leave mine on hot but set the vents to closed it does help a little, Will I see you at Bromley!

        Cheers, Ian.

          Hi Ian,

I did the heater on trick to help cool it down a bit, but I would prefer a solution that doesn't require doing that on a hot day!!!

I should be at Bromley, all being well. I come back from a week in France on the Saturday so I should be ok!

          Rgds

Feel the radiator at the bottom. If it is noticeably cooler than the top it is probably partially blocked. Flushing does not clear sediment that is very old.

FWIW mine runs a little hotter than normal in this weather, but nothing too significant

                Stagnjag

If you need a very simple Kenlowe fan over-ride, run a cable from the output of the hardtop HRW switch (fit a 'piggy-back connector) to the output of the Kenlowe switch - or the fan output of a relay if you use one (and you should).

This will give you a green light that comes on when the Kenlowe comes on and the ability to over-ride the Kenlowe switch to put the fan on early, if you wish.

Send me a pm if you want more details

                  Hi Dave,

I think you are being paranoid mate!

Going to Prescott this morning my gauge was bang in the middle, coming home again when the air temperature was so much higher, my gauge was on the right hand side of 'm'.

I kept an eye on it, but it did not get any higher so decided there was nothing to worry about

                  Al.

Exactly the same on mine today! I played beat the Sat-Nav on the way home and knocked over 20mins off my ETAThe temp guage stayed well up on the M but out of the red, I don't suppose the plastic bag that Iran into as soon as I joined the M5 helped:?.

Dave, it sounds like a partialy blocked rad. Mine did this until i fitted a new rad (old one was knackered)

My TR normally runs a needle width below the mid point of the guage, but on the way back from Prescott today at a steady 85mph it was about a needle width above normal. Dropped back to normal in the 50mph roadworks section so I'm not going to bother about it,unless the air temperature goes up by another 10 degrees. By the way the TR has no mechanical fan and the electric one makes no difference at speed

Hi Dave, the Stag temp gauge is notoriously inaccurate and is only useful as a comparator, my Smiths gauge shows around 85c in cooler weather, and fast runs in the heat nudge it up to 95c, I don't think for one moment that you have a problem. It's that old SP (Stag paranoia) again. Martin.
