    Fuel pump

Just broke down on the M1, Tried to start it numerous times, occasionally car would start but only for a few seconds and ran very weakly until finally it wouldn't start at all.
Tried bashing the fuel pump and shorting the inertia switch out to no avail.
Came back on a breakdown wagon.
When I got it home and switched the ignition on I noticed the battery indicator didn't rise hardly at all although starter would turn over. I've got one of those battery chargers with a starter mode on it so I put that on and the fuel pump burst into life and the car started. I'm suspecting the fuel pump but now it's running I can't test it. Is it worth stripping the pump down to overhaul it or would you recommend changing it? If a change is required are there any pumps better than others, what do you recommend, Thanks Terry

Hard luck . Going home on a truck kinda spoils the day, even if it does keep the petrol bills down.

The fuel pump can be overhauled. There are points under the end cap that can be cleaned to breath new life into them. If you decide to change, then this would seem a good option: http://www.ldparts.co.uk/shop/shop.p...6860d6260ea912

I am a fan of this supplier as everything is OE, top quality or a suitable, tested alternative.

Thanks Dave, that pump looks pretty impressive, thought I was going to have to pay at least double that price, thanks again Terry

Hiya Terry, that's very bad luck about the LD pump, it does look like a good option. If you can run to it, the best at a sensible price is the electronic version of the original SU, there are several impeller type pumps on the market, but for some reason they are extremely difficult to seal. Good luck. Martin.

Thanks Martin, I'm going to ring LD Parts tomorrow to see how soon they can get one. If it's a long delivery I'll go for the electronic type that you've suggested. Terry

Are you sure it is the pump? Could be battery or alternator

Happened to me on three occasions now (within this year) just as described, I have now started to suspect Lumenition.

I changed my luminition for a petronix for that reason. I don't think it's the battery or alternator as the engine was turning over quite freely. I can't explain the low voltage indication though. Terry

I would check the power feed under the washer bottle (Mk2) and the ignition controlled fuses.

Thanks John, I checked the fuses yesterday before calling out the breakdown lorry. Don't really know what you mean by the power feed but I'll have a look under the bottle. ( phone LD Parts and the pumps are back in stock so I've ordered one anyway ). Terry

                        Hi Terry,

Lumenition can give funny symptoms when it's starting to fail (mine did!!). I have just fitted an Aldon Igniter (£30 off E Bay - brand new). Works very well so far.

Hi Peter, I've already fitted a petronix, I think it's the same thing. Just tested for voltage at the fuel pump, got 12 volts and a good earth but pump not pumping, so will fit new one when it arrives. The wiring loom to the pump looks like it's been butchered at some time with multiple connectors and insulation tape so I'll sort that out when I fit the pump. I found the same sort of thing behind the radio when I fitted a new one recently, why do people do that. It makes you wonder what other bodges have been done. Terry:X

Terry, you are not alone, the previous owner had the wires from the ignition taped up with masking tape and some with sellotape. When I fitted the lower steering cowl I disturbed them and they became undone. When the Stag didn't startI found them hanging off!:X
