Hiya John, nobody's gonna shoot you down, hard water, like we have, deposits calcium on everything it touches, the kettle needs de-scaling every ten days, when we changed thirty year old water pipes in the bathroom, they were two thirds blocked. There's no way on Earth I'm putting that in my Stag. I like Sukh's technical explanation, even if it does go round the houses a bit. Martin.

Thanks everyone for the information. I really do think ther needs to be a common refernce place for the Stag basics. I've had mine for a year now and have just about got my head around it all. I used to have a Vitesse and a 4A 20 years ago. Along side the buyers guide I think it would help new owners if there was a Service guide. Oil type anti freeze % ...etc It would also help free up the Forum for more intersting items. I realise someone has to sift through all the stuff and have grief everytime something doesn't fit . But there must be some basic guidelines.Just a thought .Mike

You need to move to Devon, Martin. Kettle is used several times a day and aftermany years not a mark inside it. Never yet thrown out a scaled up kettle, nor found scale inside pipes. Luvverly and soft!

And if you can find 2 of them I'll be there as well!!

Nice to see the "official" explanation Sukh's found but I'd still need convincing that a once a year fill has sufficient quantities of anything in it to make much difference. On the other hand to buy distilled/deionised water once a year is a negligible cost compared to all the other inevitable expenses...

On the subject of corrosion from Wikipedia:

"The very lack of ions make deionized water unusually corrosive and one of the most aggressive solvents known."

The cleaner the water the more able it is to dissolve things.

Looks like a new career beckons as an estate agent . The things I have to consider to increase the number of Devon members! Mind you, to find the properties you are looking for at those prices I would have my work cut out. I have been scanning the property sites to look for a flat for my Son and can'tget anything in Exeter for less than £140k :X

Hi all, I have to come down on Martin and Terry's side. I have used a 50%mix for the last 32 years. Living in Torquay we don't get the snow etc like most of you guys so freezing isn't really an issue with me Iv'e been more concerned with stopping corrosion .As modern oils can harm our engines advances in coolant /antifreeze will not. Most of us have electric fans fitted so the difference in the % differenceof the mix should be more than compensated by the fan. Also less corrosion in the system will produce a more efficient engine/cooling system. Regards Tony.

I use BASF Protect Plus Glysantin G48 since 1993.That was recommended in a telefone call with the service department of BASF. The mixture should be 50 : 50 and I made so far excellent experience. Dieter Marshall talked to BASF last year and still got the same info.

Have a look at their English version of:

                          http://www.veredlungschemikalien.bas...lysantin/tipps

There are some convincing hints how dangerous it is to mix different liquids with a different chemical protection mechanism.
