Hi All
SWMBO and I took part in the Weaver Wander Classic Car run around Cheshire on Saturday. The weather was gorgeous
. The GT6 had developed a loud clunk from the propshaft a while ago whilst on a run to the Lake District. I had been underneath the car to check things out and determined that the rear UJ on the prop was worn. Time and circumstances dictated that I did not get around to replacing the UJ before last Saturday.:?
On the return leg of the run the noise became much more pronounced and by the time we got home it was making a god awful noise as it went round aroundabouts
So, withintwo hours of arriving home the GT6 was up in the air and the prop was off. Whilst the rear UJ was worn as I had already determined, the hidden UJ at the front was SHOT:shock:
The UJ's would not budge with the usual two socket and a vice trick so I took the sucker into work today and used one of the hydraulic presses. 6 our of the 8 bearings caps obliged. Two got stuck and so were subjected to an angle grinder and cutting disc this evening. The prop is now in three bits awaiting reassembly tomorrow evening.
The failed bearing cap was self evident as it was the one with a cracked cap, no needle rollers present and a rusty inside:?:?See photo. No wonder it was clanking:shock:. Ignore the chewed up section at the top of the photo as that damage has been caused by the grinder
.
As a point of interest, Rabbits4classics recommends removing the grease nipples and replacing with a blanking plug after greasing. Does anybody on here agree with that? I have left the grease nipples in place on my Stag resto and am wondering if that was wrong?
