LT77 Rover box onto Stag Engine

I am thinking about fitting the LT77 Rover box onto the stag engine instad of the Triumph man o/d box. Has this been done? and what is needed? Is there a bellhousing available that fits, or do we need to fabricate something?

    Thanks.

I am not worried about mountings, gear stick positions or propshaft yet.. just connecting it to the engine and find a clutch to suit.

The problem with the Rover box is three-fold.

Firstly, theLT77 from a Land Rover/Range Rover has a very different output shaft (it mates to a transfer box rather than straight to a propshaft), and cannot be used.

Secondly, no matter what posesses you, don't fit a second-handLT77 box without first having it rebuilt; it will be noisy or buggered and you will kick yourself for having not rebuilt it when you had the opportunity!

Thirdly, the ratios of these boxes varies, predominantly in the first and second gears. Some of these boxes were fitted to the Sherpa/LDV van and consequently have a very low ratio which makes them a poor choice for car use. Research carefully; there are websites out there which can provide the ID numbers for each type of box.

I'm quite a fan of the box, but there are other types out there such as the Toyota 5 speed from the Supra, or the Tremec T5 (expensive), which are better. There is also the R380 which was the later variant of the LT77 and is of almost exactly the same dimensions.

I have a V8 SD1 box. I found out a while ago about the suitability of the 4x4 units! It is just the bellhousing / clutch thatI have questions about. I had read the TR7 info mentioned above, but hoped it might have been done and a bellhousing be readymade for the job - like the Rover V8 to stag gearbox.

        Thanks

          Hi djw113uk

When people first started fitting Rover V8s into Stags they often retained the Stag’s manual overdrive gearbox. To fit thus they used an adapter plate with two sets of holes – one set matched up with the Stag’s gearbox and the other with the Rover engine. While I cannot be sure about access, it is possible that the same plate could be used to fit the Stag engine to the Rover gearbox. However, you would need to be careful with regard to the length of the input shaft and the pilot/spigot bush to fit the Rover flywheel.

Unfortunately, these plates are not commonly available but you might be able to find one.
