Removing brass cage of the water pump

When i took my originalpump out it pulled the brass cage with it but when we tried to fit my new bung in Tims spare engine we found that the cage had stayed in place .we got it out with a bit of levering but i was wondering is there an easy way as this has also happened to Sukh whilst he is fitting the bung.

    Cheers Steve

    Hi Steve

Did you try fitting a slide hammer type tool to it?

No Stu we were rushing a bit but thats what it needs ,its getting it attached to the cage that would need a bit of work.

Steve, I should imagine a cheap gearbox bearing puller would do the job. You can get 2 or 3 legged versions, you would need the type that are for internal bearings like you would use to remove a crank spigot bush.

Hey Steve - i got mine out with a slide hammer using the bearing puller attachment (borrowed off my old man) - the fingers were a reasonable fit in the holes in the wall of the cage, only took 2/3 goes and out it popped.

For pump body i undid the impeller bolt and placed a large thick washer underneath then did the bolt back up and used the slide hammer fingers under the washer in the same way.

Thanks for enquiring about this Steve, I will try again Wednesday when the rest of the parts arrive (hopefully). What is a slide hammer?.

Whilst on the subject, I am now ordering the silicon hoses ( from Mr Silicon) I cannot seem to find the 16mm to 13mm reducing 90 degree elbow and 13mm 90 degree elbow. Also how do the T BOLT jubilee style clip sizes work out?

I.E for a 32mm hose will a 32-35mm T BOLT jubilee clip be ok or do I go one down in size to 29-31mm.

              Cheers.

I found 40-43mm worked for my 32mm hoses and they still had some squeeze left in them.

32mm is the internal size of the hosewhere as the t bolt clamps are sized for the inside of the clamp so you have to add the wall thickness x2 of the hose.

                      Cheers Steve

                              Hi Steve,

You can use a bolt, a big washer andselected pieces of flat steel. Bolt head under the cage, washer under the nut betweena couple of pieces of angle (or bigscrewdriver shafts) across the block. Tighten the nut and the cage will pull out.Much easier if the jackshaft is out.

                              Mark.
