    Hi Nick

    Possible alternator over charging?

Local tyre place will check it for you FOC

As Stu mentioned, a local tyre place may well check it out for you,

Remember that the alternator output voltage is controlled by the voltage regulator - which on later cars is contained within the alternator itself, but on earlier cars (like mine) has an externally-mounted voltage regulator mounted on the O/S inner wing.

Changing the alternator won't fix the problem of a duff externally-mounted regulator

Nick, do you have access toa digital voltmeter? Voltage should read about 13 to 14v (not over 14.8v when revved up).

          Hi Nick,

Mine did the same, and I had it checked out twice by a alternator/starter refurbishment place. They put it under load, and said there was nothing wrong with it. The voltmeter used to go into the red every trip, and slowly come back down to 13.5 volts.

The second time I had it checked was because the ignition warning light used to glow faintly at random times, then go off again. Again they said there was nothing wrong under load. Pain in the butt taking it on and off, as you can imagine.

I fitted a new alternator from a chap in the Club, and all has been well for the last twelve months.

I assume it must have been something intermittent in the alternator to cause the problem.

          good luck,

          Peter

Peter mine glows all the time and gets brighter when the lights are on. I have been told that it is because there is a faulty diode in the alternator, although the alternator has only been in for about 600 miles. I have a MK 2 I am a complete electrical idiot. This only started after a **** garage pricked around with it apparently the connected up some wire but Inever got to the bottom of what they actually did as they were incompetent!!

                Hi Nick,

I had a similar problem a few weeks ago.

I checked this weekend and all sorted - self healing. If only clutches could be like volt meters
