hi everyone,
my ex-swmbo used my car at the weekend and when I collected it from her house I noticed that that the brakes were VERY soft with excessive travel. When I checked the fluid reservoir the front half was empty! I've checked the back of each wheel and there doesn't appear to be any fluid loss and I can't find any leaks around the master cylinder or servo.
So, I presume the seals in the master cylinder have gone? I've topped it up and the brakes seemed fine again and the level hasn't dropped again so not sure.
I also have quite a loud hissing noise when pumping the brakes - does this suggest servo failure too? The usual test of pumping the brakes until hard then starting the engine gives usual result (i.e. pedal drops slightly). there's no fluid loss above the brake pedal either.
I realise some work is required but don't want to fit a new master cylinder and find that it's the servo (or vice-versa)...
just when I'd finally got my hood to go up and down properly!
cheers,
Toby
