    new brakes

    Hi all

I am having trouble with my new rear brake shoes and drums, brand new, the problem is that they are binding when I jack the car and spin the wheel, I released the handbrake cables and adjusted them up with the footbrake when I fitted them,

I have also fitted new springs and handbrake arms in an effort to remedy the problem, all to no avail, The binding is not continuous, it is as if the drums are not round, ie the wheel will spin freely for part of the revolution and then bind , the shoes have a leading edge on them, so is this normal for a new set of shoes and drums?

When I run the car up the road the drums are getting hot, obviously not desirable

    Any suggestions will be appreciated.

    Thanks

    Mick L

Have you put the springs on correctly ie inboard, just a idea.

Mine did the same - springs were fitted incorrectly.

        Hi,

As Peter said double check the springs are fitted correctly. Also before you refit the drums makes sure the adjusters are fully off - giving maximum clearance. Then disconnect both handbrake cables. IMPORTANT: make sure you pull both levers as far as possible towards the back of the car - i.e. off. I tied mine back with some wire. refit the drums and press the brake pedal a few times hard to centre the shoes and you should hear the adjusters click up. Spin both drums a couple of times and press the pedal again. Refit the cables and check they are not too tight and the handbrake action is good.

I found it was not sufficient to just disconnect the handbrake cables but I had to physically hold the levers back to get them to adjust properly. The back brakes and handbrake are now superb - handbrake will easily lock the wheels along a dry road.

          Thanks for the tips guys

I will try them at the weekend, particularly tying back the levers.

I will report back when done, fingers crossed

            Hi Mick,
Roger is spot on there, that's the way I did mine when I bought the car seven years ago. Got the missus to pump the brake pedal as I laid underneath pulling back on the levers. I could hear the adjusters clicking, and the handbrake held on two notches when parked on my steep(ish) drive. Pity I did the springs wrong when I fitted new shoes last year!
Just keep checking the drums when you have had a run to ensure they don't get too hot.
            cheers,
            Peter
