    Front suspension strut top mounts

Hi all, did my first long journey in the Stag this evening! (Tintern to Cheltenham via M50 and M5) It was not without event though. I've got a nasty vibration from the O/S front suspension. Being paranoid I had a full tool kit in the car and pulled into a car park and checked the tightness of the front wheel bearing (just replaced). All ok. Shook wheel, nasty knock. Realised after a while that the top strut mount is completely shot.

Just looking at new parts and £30 for standard, or >£100 for roller type. Question is, which to go for? Anyone got any experience of roller type who can offer advice?

On the plus side, temperature behaved itself, staying rock solid at about 1/3 the gauge with the electric fan not coming on at all until I sat at traffic lights in Cheltenham.

    Hi

I personally would go for the Witor roller type conversion as it is far superior than the standard item and will fit which you may not be so lucky with the pattern standard version.

BTW your fan should not come on at a 1/3 temp set it up so it comes on at just above half otherwise your engine will be running to cool.

I thought about the roller type, but at 100 notes each a bit pricey, especially after I spent boat loads on front shocks, bushes, discs ect.

I bought standard from Rimmers, no issues although Ian F bought standard from another supplier which had too much play in them?

If money isn't an issue (which it probably isn't if you can afford to live in Cheltenham) go for the roller type

      Cheers

I'm not sure if the roller ones will make much difference to the 'feel' of the steering, so I'd buy the standard ones and save the money. The originalstandard itemhas probablybeen on there for40 years so I can't see why the replacements wouldn't last another 40.

I replaced my strut top mounts last year after I found one was falling apart. I looked at the roller type and apart from the cost the other thing that put me off was it still looked like it was using the same mounting with a different bearing. Itsthe mounting that fails.

I have the roller-bearing Witor ones.... as i said in a recent thread i think it is a much better design and doesn't have any play - the mount itself is still the same - just the bearing changes.

you pays your money and takes your choice

Well I was all set to go for the Witor ones but I rung him up this morning and he's out of stock and doesnt expect to get any more as the GPB to AU$ is at such a bad rate it would make them £150 each (he gets them made in Oz).

                Doh!

P.S Dont live in Cheltenham - far too expensive! I'm in Tewkesbury :P

Thats interesting becauseI spoke to Chris W about buying ready made up front struts with lowered springs fitted and standard top mounts and to be honest he wasent interested, said he had too much other work on. Doing mine at the moment and Rimmers only had one bearing sleeve in stock so ordered the other one from Paddocks, Paddocks one seems to have a coating on the inside which feels almost slipery, wish id bought two from them now, Rimmers top mounts seem ok though.

Don't over think this after buying a car that was 38 years old and had all original suspension etc I went through all suspension parts etc and replaced with stock if cost is not an option you can do what you want but at the end of the day you just drive it for pleasure then go stock.

                    cheers Stuart
