Has anyone tried one of these out? Maplins are selling them for a tenner. Although I'm no sparky I wouldn't have thought a 1.5w charge would damage a battery if its left on constantly?
If it really is only 1.5W thats 0.125 Amps at 12 volts not only is it not going to damage your battery but I doubt if it would do more than keep the clock running.
If the 1.5W is the max, what does this drop to in indirect light?
I use one, it seems to work OK. I run the lead from the cigarette lighter through the driver's quarterlight, and have the unit on the roof or the bonnet as the car faces a window (which only has the sort of not very see-through glass you get in e.g. a bathroom, but it seems to let through enough light to activate the charger.) I got mine from ebay, similar price to Maplin. My dad also uses one to charge the battery on his 1960-something Fiat 500, successfully (altho my Stag starts a lot better than the Fiat!)
