    Bad Petrol Smell

    Hi All,

Firstly, can I just say how useful this forum is and it's a testament to all the people that care about their stags and also the stags of other members. I have been a member of many different clubs, but this one if far ahead of anything else I have experienced.

Now all the gushy stuff is out of the way, on to the point!

I didn't post a new thread on this. Instead, I trawled through the dozens of entries already posted to see if their were common problems and solutions...........and there were!

The boot smelled really bad of fuel, so when I checked the previous threads I noticed that many people found problems with the short breather / stub that comes out of the top of the fuel tank. They were there for Federal cars I believe and we don't need them (or rather we don't need them to be connected anywhere). What we need is to blank them off. Mine had been done, but like so many other people have found, the blanking device (usually a piece of fuel pipe, bunged with a bolt and jubilee clip) had perished and was leading to fuel vapour filling the boot. It took me around 15 mins to locate and cut the new piece of fuel hose as required, find a suitable bolt (around M6 I think) fit it to the stub, tighten the jubilee clip and replace all the floor boards and carpet.

If it wasn't for the forum I would have been changing filler pipes, taking out the tank to look for pin holes caused by condensation in the boot etc etc.

So thanks for all the previous threads.

    Cheers,

    Matt.

      Hi Andy,

Sorry your wallet took a hammering. Mine has been walloped already (only had the car a fortnight) so it was nice to have a zero cost and quick fix to a problem that I have always hated!

      Cheers.

I had a petrol smell in the boot each time I filled up at one time. It turned out thet the jubilee clip on the fleible filler neck was loose. Once tightened it went away!

          Hi,

As has been said before, don't forget to check the condition of the tank and also run the engine with the fuel pump exposed so you can see any leaks!

I had a bad petrol smell in my boot, it turned out to be the rubber filler neck had perished and the join to the breather pipe was split. I replaced it and the smell went. (after quite a bit of airing!)
