I think it will harm recruitment of new members, and suppress the vibrance of the forum to have SOC membership as a requirement to post here. The forum works brilliantly as it is, as an open forum. Where's the evidence that this change willbe positive?
But if we really must try it, why not allow temporary membership for 3 months?
Is there any hope that it will now be a vBulletin style package with all its functionality?
How about sections (Technical, PhotoGallery, Parts for sale, Restoration Projects and the like) ?
This has all been suggested before but only the For Sale section was taken up by Carl.
In some ways I would like the categories but I also like the way you look at all the topics on one page it makes you look and sometimes comment when you probable would not if in a category.
I work on the principle of if it isn't broken don't fix it.
The forum seems fine as it is currently so why change? I'mhope someone will explain the rationale.

Hi Graham
I believe the forum is a good addition to the club and has attracted new members but there is a high proportion of non members using the forum on a regular basis
With the club memebrship in decline over the last couple of years this would mean a cut back on funds for national day / tooling fund / etc
as these events and facilities could be scaled back as a result of reduced membership ( or increased annual fees to maintain status quo)
It did state in the email that non forum members would be moved to a suitable category - this may be limited access for three months of something similar
Three months should be long enough to see if it is what you want
Surely it is meant that there will be a members' section on the forum where only members will be able to post?
When i read the email i interpreted it that the accounts would be categorised as member/non-member...... that in turn would be used to determine the security policy to allow read-only or read/contribute.
i could however, have misunderstood - wouldn't be the first time !
I'm definitely not going to come over all New Labour and say restricting access to non-members violates their human rights - after all, I joined the SOC before I was even aware of the forum..... this place was a huge bonus.
If a 3 month grace period is granted as a taster to non-members, then that suits me - if after that time they still want to be on here, then stump up like the rest of us - you pays yer money TO make yer choice.....
Besides, if read-only privileges are granted to them after the expiry of the trial period, they could still use it as a encyclopaedic workshop manual for ever more....
This seems very topical as there was an article in Classic Weekly about the impact of Internet forums on Classic Car Clubs.
Must admit i think that the Club should get support through subscription i view it as my contribution to the survival of our cars through a team effort, i love the Internet as as we live in a very rural area it is a great way to communicate with other owners but i must admit if this accelerates the viability of the Club as a whole i would be concerned.
If new members can see the great help the forum provides i hope it would encourage them to join the club so as to be able to contribute.
In the words of the great bard "There is no such thing as a free lunch" and i think if there were no club there would be no forum and vice versa.
