Oil in the vee

Hi all,

Just got back from a 60 mile jaunt and the car ran sweet as a nut, except we kept getting a whiff of hot oil. Had a look when we got back and the smell seems to be due to a small amount of oil which is at the back of the vee, under the dizzy. Less than a tablespoon but obviously enough to waft the smell into the car when the engine's hot.

Any idea's where it could be leakingfrom? I've had a good look and cannot see any obvious sources.

It's normally the oil seal in the water pump or it could be a cam cover.

Cam covers have new(ish) gaskets and are OK - first thing I checked. I will have a closer look at the water pump cover. Hopefully if it's that it won't get worse and I can live with it - don't fancy that job!

Not sure if blueMK2 meant ' o' ring in the distributor. That is a possibility. I would wipe it all clean and warm it up in the garage and watch carefully, including using a small mirror in the vee pointing up the tunnel towards the water pump area.

No the oil seal in the water pump, when they leak you get oil in the V.

Junction between chain cover and headgasket .Thats where mine now has a slight leak since doing my chains:X.
