Seasidebill, i'm a service engineer, on call, and have to drive in london which is a nightmare. Public transport, however good/safe is of no use to me and many others. Have you been on the tube lately?? My god its awful. I drive in many of the big cities, London is by far the worst one. I dont think Ken has helped at all, traffic is worse in london now than it was 8 years ago but now i have to pay £8 congestion charge! (which i think is really an admission fee to london) still, it'll help pay for the olympics:shock:

I think your missing my point...at least it has public transport system supported by a policy to sustain and improve it. Yes, I have been on the tube recently - until recently I travelled to London at least 2 days per week. The railway network is crap and was always the weakest link when things went wrong, but the tube was generally reliable. I agree the tube isn't a pleasure ride at peak times, but it does a reasonable job of moving 3 or 4 million people each day. The congestion charge for obvious reasons isn't popular, but we clearly cannot continue to squeeze an every increasing number of vehicles into a finite already overcrowded space - so what's your alternative? As far a doing business in London is concered, it's a cost. If you pay Congestion Charge - pass it on to your customer. It's not as though your competitors have an option not to pay it (like the US Embassy :X). And if you're mad enough to work and live there, you just have to accept there's a high cost to enjoying all that grime, overcrowding, crime, rudeness, terrorism, noise, political correctness and general mayhem!

Thankfully i dont live there, wouldnt if you paid me. Unfortunately the nature of my business takes me there alot. (large financial sector). London is stiil under continuos development which is good for its economy, and mr livinstons'. But lorries have to pay more than me to bring goods and building material into his town to develop his town. The london streets are full of dirty taxis which i'm sure pollute more than my passat, yet they dont have to pay!!:XThe charge isnt just to cut vehicle numbers its also pollution. And yes your right, its a very dirty place, overcrowded and noisy. Not at all like Stourport on Severn:dudegods country!!!)

        Merry xmas

Feel free to rant about the state of London and it's government Jason - maybe it will make some people think and actually vote to make it better!

Kryten, cant see it happening. Ken said he would not only raise congestion charge but also expand its area, and he stiil got voted back in!!! Must be all the cyclists voting for him!!

And dont get me started on them!!!

Did anyone see Topgear the other week? Apparentlyif you register your car as a minicab you don't have to pay the congestion charge. The annual fee was something like £80 or so, not sure, but worth it if you travel to London a lot. It seems there's several Maybachs and similar 'minicabs' registered in London:X:X.

I'm glad I don't live there anymore, but if I did have to go there by road it would be on my motorbike for sure.

London always gets slated lately and quite rightly so, but when I was growing up there in the 60s and early 70s it had some great things to do without all the agg you get now. Admittadly it had a bad element but not on the scale it has now. I sawconcerts atthe Rainbow,Ice skating at Alexander palace, football at Highbury and White Hart Lane on alternative weeks, fishing on the Lea and lots of nightlife.

The only way to go is the zero tolerance likethey had in New York. As usual were15 years behindAmerica.

Does that mean we'll get George Bush in 2022 . I'll need to make a note in my diary to top myself that year!

For all my ranting, I actually quite London. The skyline along the Thames from Canary Wharf to Westminster Bridge is quite stunning and it's got a rich history and culture that most other capitals can only dream about. Sure there's a lot wrong with it, but that's true of any major capital city in the world. However, I woudn't trade the open space and tranquility of the West Country to live there, but that's largely because I'm a grumpy old git with a petrol habit
