    petrol dripping from carb overflows

    Help

After a good run on a hot day , when the car is put back in the garage , after 5 to 10 minutes the garage smells ofpetrol , after further investigation I found I had some drips ofpetrolcoming from carb overflow pipe

Late last year I had the carburettors striped ,cleaned, balanced and tuned. they also replaced 2X main jets adjusters and seals

This was done by a recommended carburettor center

Nothing else was replaced as there was no need

The car has run great since with no problems hot or coldstarting

I took took the car back to them today , they were at a loss for why it would be doing this , they could only think that it was the petrol "Percolating " in the carbs after the engine was turned offand the engine bay was hot???

The car has a kenwood fan fitted thatstays on to cool the engine on ignition off

    Has anybody got any ideas

    Thanks

    John

It sounds like the needle valves are not sealing, Leave the car with the ignition on and check the fuel pump stops clicking, if it still does but slower than normal and fuel is coming out the overflow that's your problem

I have done as you suggested , and indeed the pump clicked for 10ish seconds as normal , then clicked slower then sporadically , and petrol came out of the overflow pipe

So would the needle valves want setting or replacing ??

      Thanks

        Hi John,

I would suggest that they may have used 'will-fit' needle valves instead of the viton tipped ones. You could ask them. LD Parts and Burlen supply the correct ones.

Had the same problem at the Bromley Pageant last weekend.

We sat for a while before entering the arena for the public display. When we drove in, I couldn't drive slowly or idle - engine kept dying.

Someone in the audience called out that I was losing coolant - turned out to be petrol pouring out my overflow from the right-hand carb...

Ordered some viton tipped needle valves today - went to Rimmers (for a change) as they are only £10 each with VAT. According to Paddocks, that's cheaper than they can get them cost so hopefully they are okay...:?

I bought the kits that LD supply and replaced them when mine went, you end with bits you wont use but you get the gaskets and washers and some new diaphragms, you'll also need an O ring and fibre washer for the pedestal.

You will need the float chamber gaskets as well. When I rebuilt my carbs the gaskets were stuck to the surfaces and took ages to remove completely.

Just a thought here but i would look into the float chamber and just make sure it's not getting mucked up with debris from the tank i had a simular problem with a Triumph

is the petrol filter rusty looking ?

To cut a long story short here i changed my carbs, floats, filters etc etc only to finally work out that no sooner had i changed the petrol filter than it had turned a nasty shade of brown leading me in the end to a rusty tank

No 2 filters in line and both spotless

                  Thanks Gents

I will be going back to them now that I have some idea what the problem is

The thing is do I expect this to be put right for free? . Because they were told when they did thee job last year ( not 700 miles ago ) to replace what was needed , It was not a cheep job just under £200

If it were me, i wouldn't expect the needle valves to be replaced for free...... at the time i doubt you had a problem, hence didn't need to be changed.

It would be a different matter if you had asked the mechanic to rebuild them. You can always ask if they'll do it gratis - you never know !

                      Hi Jasper,

My Stag just failed MOT and this was a problem. So firstly I shall check float chamber to see if muddied up.
