    HT Lead positions

    Hi Guys,

I have been chasing my tail for several days and decided to start back with the basics.

When no.2 is at 12 deg BTDC, should the rotor arm be pointing at no. 1 HT lead on the dizzy, and then the leads attached clockwise in the firing order, so next no.2 then 7,8,4,5,6,3 ?

    Cheers.

The rotor should be pointed at no 2 when the timing marks are at 12degrees BTDC, and the rotor arm turns anticlockwise. For some reason triumph decided to set everything up on no2, then cast the firing order into the inlet manifold starting at no1 just to confuse everyone. Apparently the firing order is wrong in various publications , but I didnt realise this as I have always followed the numbers on the casting

      Hi Matt,

When no 2 is on the firing stroke the rotor arm should be point at (or very nearly at) the no 2 lead. Then its anti clockwise in the firing order. You can tell which one is no 2 as its in line with a line drawn from the centre of the dizzy shaft to the outer coil bolt.

First principals are the way to go, just don't try applying logic to the cylinder numbering, or ask why we time to number 2 - it is a car after all, and I've never found logic to be of much use Martin.

Logic would say that 'our' no. 2 on the V8 is no.1 on the slant 4 variant - hence timed on this cylinder.
