Auto-65 that goes clunk in the night

I have read a number of articles that say that a Clunk when engaging reverse is normal? But the one I have is very severe. I have lifted the rear wheels and with the engine running at 800rpm and brake engaged I select reverse upon which there is a severe clunk from the transmission – it sounds as if it might be from the Diff?

Before I start to strip down the differential to check backlash etc can some just reassure me that this is a probable cause?

First time I have owned an auto Stag as my last was a manual bought in 1979 (RTH818S) if anyone knows of it’s location?

Check the universal joints in the propshaft and rear drive shafts - a total of 6!

I would have thought your uj's are fine , they would have to be well gone to cause a "severe clonk" , my stag clonked every timeit went into reverse infact it was really bad, the car moved back about 4 inches, i found an old 2.5 pi in a local scrappy and took the diff out of that and put in my stag, it "clonked" but not half as much , i put it down to the 2.5 pi had a bit of wear as well, i know the ratio is different on the pi , but the difference is minimal and in fact i can't tell the difference. DAI THE STAG !

Shows on DVLA database as 'unlicenced' since July 2002 e.g not taxed or SORNed so likely to be languishing in a shed somewhere or worse?

Your post caught my eye because I spotted a verywell cared forblue Stag on the back of a trailer near Bristol, heading south on the M5 yesterday - 1st two digits (I think) were RT, but it was a 'R' suffix. Has any of our west country friends taken delivery of a nice new Stag (or was it on it's way home in disgrace!)
