    I was just going to trawl thru some of my old posts as i remember somebody asking about them in basingstoke (think it was you),have already rang them today got rtnr guess their just busy(certainly were when i was there having exhaust done.

        The other effect of the balance pipe is to alter the tuned length of the exhaust, if your silencers are of a straight through design it will not make much difference to the back pressure, if they are more restrictive then splitting the flow will obviously make a difference.

        Also the type of exhaust manifold will have an effect, if they are the standard cast jobbies it will make less difference than if you have tubular ones

        When I first fitted the stag engine to the TR I used completely seperate systems, when I realised that the stags had a balance pipe I fitted one. With the balance pipe the exhaust note was more muted, it sounded slower but felt faster:?

        Since I had done a rolling road run once before I decided to try again, These were the results, figures are bhp

        RPM

        2000 2500 3000 3500 4000 4500 5000 5500 5750

        without balance pipe 53 84 98 115 132 149160168 169

        With balance pipe 66 88 108 126 140 154 158 159 155

        As can be seen having no balance pipe gave a peak horsepower advantage of 14bhp, however below 5000rpm there were big gains in torque. note at 3000 rpm the balance pipe exhaust gave an extra 10 bhp, and this is the sort of revs we spend most of our time running at, and this is why it felt quicker. The gains at low rpm outweighed the losses further up. A further important point to note was that the fuel consumption actually improved by 10% with the balance pipe fitted, hence it has stayed that way ever since

        I had a very similar situation when I fitted a set of big valve heads to a Rover V8 many years ago when I was doing a bit of drag racing. There was definately a lot more power, I had to lift off at 140mph to avoid over revving, whereas before it would struggle to reach 140 (Yes it was scary in a 2 door toledo). On the drag strip it was actually slower due to the loss of bottom end torque and I ended up fitting arally spec camshaft to make the engine work properly

          I always new some financial beating would be on the cards as theStag had not been used that much by previous owner.

          It just occured to me that hgf only occured after the exhuast was fitted and i did not want to risk of further damage as tommorow i will be picking car up.

          As for the car what can i say, wanted one since12 years old ( guy2 doors up had one), i use to deliver his morning paper just as he was setting of for work.
