    Spin on oil filter

I've just removed my spin on oil filter element but noticed the quite different size to the new one I'm going to fit. Looking at numbers, the one coming off is a

    Fram PH29870A

The one to go on is a

    Fram PH2964

Which is correct? Either, both or neither. It's all looking a bit vague when you ask a Stag parts supplier for a spin on filter element. In fact it's quite worrying for such a critical component to be potentially wrong.

When the spin on oil filter kits come out, I assumed someone had selected the correct equivalent to our old paper element for us to use. Well, here are2 numbers to start with. Maybe other peoplehave even more numbers. I'm sure they can't be all correct.

    HELP!

I use the Fram PH3600. It has a higher capacity (longer) and I have been using this type for 3 years now.

Hiya Robert, as long as the mating faces i.e. the rubber seal, are the same diameter, it doesn't matter, avoid fat ones though, there's not a lot of clearance. There are at least two Ford filters that fit, one with a non-return valve and one without, you want one without, the filter lives almost upright so draining isn't an issue, but overcoming the valve might be. I get mine from Wards, they're larger capacity, I can't recall the number. Quality is pretty universal with filters, just buy what's available and not a silly price. Martin.

          Hi everyone,

Three great replies. Whilst waiting for these replies I fitted the filter and had a quick spin round. All seems well. However, the Unipart filter seems to be the busines so I will order one tomorrow and fit it straightaway when it arrives. These things are so cheap but so essential.

          Thanks again, Stag Buddies.

As Dave mentioned, GFE173 is the popular choice - i have used those and GFE166's (slightly larger) quite happily
