No flamethrower, just a grenade launcher

Thanks Chaps Gaps set new plugs didn't make the slightest difference. New inlet gaskets tomorrow. Can any one tell me why the breather from the rocker cover is needed and can I blank it off in a process of elimination. This is doing my head in and I haven't had a full day on it yet. Mike

my guess - and it is a guess; is that if it was blocked up you would have essentially closed off the oil system so you would get a pressure build up when the oil heats up. The vent on the rocker cover directs oilvapour back through the carbs where it gets burnt off. (I think!).

Does that sound about right guys?

Engines need to have a vent , the crankcase needs to vent out any pressure build up from windage or fuel leak by from the piston rings which can cause oil to push out from seals etc and in really bad cases crankcase explosion??? Inside the rocker cover where the vent pipe comes out is baffle plate which stops oil and lets only vapours out
Thats what they used to call them on large recip engines, crankcase explosion doors then they changed them to Crankcase relief valves, reason being that calling them explosion doors implied that an explosion could happen. I worked on one that the crankcase relieved not for the faint hearted I can tell you.

                  Cheers Stuart

So what happens on the left hand side then. That doesn't have a breather. So could I temporarilly blocke this off. I'm sure I've got a leak somewhere. Just trying to locate it. Rather do it this way than run propane over the joints. Mike.

As long as you have one breather that will be plenty, If your looking for a vacuum leak I guess you could remove and plug the breather pipe not the cover, have not had that problem so far.

There is open air space between the two cam covers via the timing chain cover so only one vent required.
