    Petrol

Filled up at Tesco 2 days ago and the car has run a bit jumpy since ,A few people have told me that they wont use tesco fuel again because the same has happened to them , Anyone here had this happen to them ????

And I have been wondering will the Stag run OK on the super unleaded you can get from some stations , or could it do any harm ???

    Thanks

    Hi John,

I find mine actually runs much better on the super unleaded and I have done 20,000 miles using mainly super now without problems. It seems to like Shell V power or BP Ultimate best. I believe the only downside is that super can rot the carb diaphragms.

Every so often you will fill up with crap fuel. I have never used Tescos offerings, but my second to last tankfull (cant remember what make) of regular unleaded pinked like like mad at low revs. Problem went away when I filled up again

Supermarket fuel is the same as Shell, BP, Texaco, whatever, right up until it is put into a road tanker, it's only at that point that the Oil companies add their own additive packs and that is where the difference lies. Supermarket fuel is cheaper due to the absence of such additives, it therefore typically doesn't contain the detergents etc that keep engine internals cleaner.

i used to run a 525i BMW, tesco's petrol, well i will just say that it drank the suff, MPG was really low,it really didnt like it at all, octane rating was too low. i have used Sainsburys super ever since, more MPG better quality of fuel. i'm now using it in the stag, it seems to like it and had no problems.

In the M3 world, extensive tests have been done by a supposedly independant tuning specialist on fuels.

The results were that tesco 99 and V Power 99 were almost identical in performance, with BP Ultimate next.

IMO high octane fuels are only good in performance fornewish cars and not for the likes of Stags etc, I think its just a Placebo effect if one thinks there is a difference. Waste of money in a Stag, to reiterate this is only myopinion.

I would probably agree. Even though the Stag wasn't designed to run on leaded fuel, I don't think it needed an especially high octane although who's to say thatindividual cars won't run better on the better stuff.

Unless there is evidence that 97ron or 99 ron fuel harms the valve seats, diaphrams or whatever Iwould be surprised if it hurt the Stag engine. However you are probably paying the extra 5p/lit for no real benefit over the basic 95 ron.

I guess most of you have unleaded head conversions now or is it still a case of using a lead- additive to unleaded fuel?

As you said yourself the Stag was designed to run on unleaded and that's all I use. There was some talk of dodgy valves or seats around some years ago, but AFAIK they are fine now. I fitted all new valves, seats and guides a while back, so you could say my engine has never seen leaded fuel, so no memory effect.

When we had the MG we ran that on unleaded with no problems, figuring that money saved on expensive fuel would go towards head work when needed. (Sold the car now so it's SEP!!)

Not necessary either way. The Stag engine was designed to run on 95 RON unleaded.

Depends more on how your car is set up, the extra octane will usually allow you to run a little more advanced without pinking.

No need to conversions - std. is fine for unleladed fuel (unless you had dodgy replacement valve-seats/valves fitted as replacemnts to originals in the past)

Ahhh..well that's something I have learned...I just assumed that the Stag was designed to run on leaded.
