Ok... well back to this again! I thought I'd solved the problem. I eventually purchased the O/S loom as advised and fitted it (I've assumed seeing as it's a basic on and off switch, it didnt matter which way round the wires went). Everything seemed to be working fine.... until this evening!

Took her out for a blast, and was cruising down the country lanes in 4th with O/D engaged. Went to disengage, and nothing..... then trying to get home I had the same symptoms as before..... what feels like clutch slip and judder when in 1st and 2nd. I'm pretty sure it' still engaged as in 3rd and 4th the rev's are really low.

    Any ideas?

    Hi Jon,

The o/drive requires power to engage and it disengages when power is switched off. You are correct in that the switch is basically an on/off device and it is immaterial which way it is connected.

You could try removing the o/drive fuse. This will remove power to the solenoid and determine if the switch is faulty: it may have shorted out so it won't switch off.

If the o/drive remains engaged even though the fuse is removed, then it is a mechanical fault.

    Hi Dave,

I'll try removing the fuse, but the way the car is on my drive (nice slope), I would need to reverse off.... I suspect this is a no go if the O/D is still on! Is there a way to check if the O/D is engaged without having to move the car?!? :?

I had a similar problem on a dolly sprint overdrive a few years ago and asked one of the overdrive specialists what the problem was likely to be and he said it was dirt in the passageways that release the oil pressure when overdrive was disengaged. This lets the overdrive float in a halfway state between engaged and disengaged and leads to the overdrive clutch slipping.

I can remember stripping the overdrive and finding a small piece of metal in one of the passageways, and I know that I fitted a new bearing set when I rebuilt it, but for the life of me I cannot remember if it is a unit I am currently using or is the rebuilt one attatched to a rebuilt gearbox sitting in the shed at the moment:?
