Old worn Stromberges will do this when you get to much wear on the butterfly spindles, I had mate from years ago who worked for Dove's (BL main agent) also told me that this and worn needles was quite a problem on this set up and not helped any further if the throttle disc had the poppet valves fitted. If you think about it a warmed up engine at idle has a high vacuum, which will be trying to draw air wherever it can and fuel past the needles if worn and possibly creating the conditions for this to take place.
