New member with high idle engine when hot

    Old worn Stromberges will do this when you get to much wear on the butterfly spindles, I had mate from years ago who worked for Dove's (BL main agent) also told me that this and worn needles was quite a problem on this set up and not helped any further if the throttle disc had the poppet valves fitted. If you think about it a warmed up engine at idle has a high vacuum, which will be trying to draw air wherever it can and fuel past the needles if worn and possibly creating the conditions for this to take place.

      just read all the above, ref high tick over revs when hot, i had exactly the same problem for years, tried all sorts to stop it without any luck. then one day i though it may be the throttle linkage sticking when hot ? as a temp measure i put a strong elastic band on the linkage to make sure it was coming off completly, ie the aloy linkage not sticking when hot, that was two years ago and ive never had the problem since, dead cheap but worked for me.

        According to Peter a LD Parts, there should be a fibre washer on the spindle, under the nut and washer that holds the carb assembly onto the inlet manifolds. Just fitted one as I have the same problem but the trouble is if you try to torque the nut up to the required value, the fibre washer splits, bugger:?Terry

          Did you use the steel flat washer too? This should prevent the fibre one splitting. The fibre one is only to stop air leaks.

            Yes Dave, I put the fibre washer under the steel washer, but the torque setting recommended in the manual burst it before the value was reached.

              Hi Terry,
              On some items on the Stag, I (rightly or wrongly) do not adhere to torque settings and use 40 years of experience to just tighten them up until I feel they are tight enough, without risking stripping the thread.
              The carb pedastal if one such item where I do this - just my preference.

                Thanks Peter, because I'm suffering from high tickover when hot, the feedback I've had suggests an intake air leak. Thought I'd follow the manual and compress the 'O' ring under the carbs on the inlet manifold. I should have known better. Terry

                  My high idle problem now seems to have been solved!

                  As this Federal US Stag was equipped with the emission control systemspreading a spiderweb of tubes and canisters etc in the engine bay, we took out most of it but not all. That was a mistake, probably causing false air entry when hot.

                  Reading all your reactions there are more ways to get into high idle problems. Interesting stuff!
