    manifold-what would you do?

Had a stag with wobbly carbs (found out later that people run them like that!)
Bought a 2/h manifold (didn't know about Helicoil then)
Put it in a while back and had a water leak (then read all the threads about fitting manifolds!)
So went back to the original and helicoiled it (thank you Stuart!)
And on Saturday went to take the replacement manifold out.
With all bolts removed it would not budge (I had fitted it the recommended way, loosening one head)
What would you do? Apply force? Use K-seal and leave it in?
    Any bright ideas?

It will only be the sealant holding it ,i would use a lever in such a way that you dont damage anything, once it starts to let go it will be easy.

    Cheers Steve

Mine took some levering to remove - but some carefully place pieces of wood (Steve would be proud ) and a long pry bar did the job

I have not yet had to do this job (thankfully the K Seal worked!) but do you have to loosen a head? I would have thought this could easily lead to a Head gasket problem?? - just wondering:?

              Hi Chris,

I think popular opinion says never loosen a head (particularly if its well sealed) to fit the manifold.

Using Payen gaskets with Stag Wellseal should do the job - I've just done it, OK so far.

If all of the bolts are out I'm sure it should come out without too much sweat.

When you say you helicoiled the original manifold, I guess you mean the carb pedestal stud? Again, I've just done the same thing and it worked a treat.

Hasn't solved my lumpy running though.

Looking at it differently, if the manifold is weeping the K-Seal is almost certain to fix it, if it is a major leak it might still work, but you would have to question the maniold bolt torques. Be careful not to strip the threads in the heads though - you'll need more helicoils (some people recommend helicoiling them all anyway). Probably a good shout, but I only needed to do the one.

Hope you get it sorted either way.

              Matt.

I know it states to loosen a head in the manual but you be stupid or very brave to do it this way, if you think about it you would be releasing the pressure on the already compressed gasket then dragging or pushing it sideways then expecting it to seal again with no problems. OK to do on rebuild but you'd be bl**dy stupid to do it on perfectly serviceable heads with no problems, Only my opinion though

                Ian.

Done it again, must be more careful with that send button:shock:

Just done manifold gaskets on mine and, yep, had to take it back off again. Although ROM says "Caution: One cylinder head must be slackened before fitting inlet manifold" I really didn't want to mess around with heads.

I fitted it to one head, only to find that holes didn't quite line up on other head - hence removal. If you're absolutely sure you've got all the fixings out then, like others have said,it can only be the sealant and judicious manipulation should budge it.

For me, I loosely fitted all bolts then progressively tightened all fixings. After advice on here, I'd helicoiled ALL bolt holes. Fingers crossed and touch wood, all ok so far
