    Faulty viscous fan coupling

    Hi Folks

My viscous fan coupling failed a couple of weeks ago after onlyonly 2500 miles. The noise it made caused me to stop immediately thinking Jack shaft ,timing chain or maybe the clutch release bearing had disintergrated. Fortunately when I settled down to investigate rationaly I found that there was a huge ammount of play in the fan coupling bearing, there was no viscous resistance and when I spun the blades the bearing made a horrible graunching noise. As we were going away in the Stag the following day I made a panic trip to my favourite supplier in Chester for a new one. which runs beautifuly

The crap coupling I bought from SOC spares 2000 miles ago! so on return home I attempted to contact them to complain. Guess what , I've tried to ring them numerous times on Friday,Saturday and today(Monday) but although the phone rings there is no reply and no answerphoneDoes anyone know if they've gone out of business or do they just not answer the phone.

Hi Tony, I've heard that SOC spares are quite difficult to get hold of. My VC also has play in it and will spin freely each way, so I have removed it and will rely on my 16" Kenlowe. Too many people have had VCs' fail shortly after buying them for my liking!

    Cheers

      Tony,

If your cooling system is in good nick, one of the large Kenlowe fans will provide all the cooling that you need. I've used one of the 16" fans for many years but I'm told that the new, smaller, two-speed, fans are even better.

Personally, I'm not keen on the VC fans, however serviceable.

If you need help, pm me and I'll do what I can.

Dodgy viscous couplings have been around for a while. LD Parts stopped selling them for a while and even asked for the one that I bought from them back for a refund. I had already fitted it to the car by then so I didn't take up the offer (It is still going strong). They are now selling them again so you can be pretty sure that they are of a suitable quality or Peter wouldn't be selling them. (No connection, just a happy customer!)

Hi Jason Thanks for the reply. I too have a 16 inch Kenlow fitted, but I feel that the VC helps to keep the under bonnet temp down when the Kenlow isn't running

          Cheers Tony

            Guys,

There is a very simple way to provide an over-ride for the Kenlowe.

Connect the output of the hardtop heated rear window switch to the output of the Kenlowe switch.

If you need to over-ride the Kenlowe switch - for example approaching the exit queue at a show, pull the HRW switch and the fan will turn on. Also, the little light below the HRW switch will turn on whenever the fan should be on. Note that this will still glow, even if the fan has failed, which could be useful.

            FWIW

            Peter

Yes thats exactly why I leave mine on with an electric backup, especially to cool the trans oil cooler. My VC spins fairly easily but while no play in bearings will keep it.

Incidentally while talking to Tony Hart Sunday, he mentioned he uses standard cooling with electric assistance but also has an oil cooler for the power steering as it boils at racing speeds. Could this be why rack seals don't last long?

Thanks for the advice folks . I've already cut 4 inches off the ends of the rear bonnet seal ,shortened the deapth of the front number plate (I know its illegal but it's not enough to be immediately obvious) as the standard plate blanks off the air intake behind, and fitted an air scoop with the same shape as the lower intake but flaired so that it protrudes below the bottom of the number plate . As I didn't have a problem in the first place I will stop being paranoid and just throw this one away if it fails and rely on the Kenlow. Many thanks to everyone

                Cheers Tony

Incidentally, when I spoke to Kenlowe about which fan to fit, they recommended also retaining the standard fan if using in a hot country. Not sure if UK qualifies for that!

I'd rather keepelectric as a backup
