    1972 Mk.11 (BW35?) Auto gearbox

    I have just got bits back together and taken my stag back on the road. The gearbox couldn't decide which gear to be in so I put some oil in (300ml) and then it worked fine. Why does the oil leak out so badly? I have heard that there is a syphon effect when hot, I have also seen the use of seal swell mentioned. How do you cure it for good? If it is a syphon effect, surely there is a cure? Please can any one help me?

    This is a common problem with BW Box, there are seals that can be changed without removing box, but my guess is it's leaking more when the car is not being used. We had the same problem and never curred it, but if we usedit daily it didn't leak. The oil tends to drain back out of the torque converter then leaks out wherever it can we even had it coming out of the kickdown cable about 2" above the G/Box because the outer case on the cable had split..............As far as using an additive I wouldn't bother I was given some when we were in the Netherlands got half way home and it dumped most of the oil...ended having to rebuild box..Personally I don't know anybody with a BW Box that doesn't leak................We have now fitted a ZF box no leaks.

      WELCOME BACK ROGER ! good to hear from you ! Absolutely agree, there is supposed to be a non return valve to prevent the torque converter draining but they fail early in the car's life, as you say - they ALL leak. :dude: Martin.

        Many thanks Roger! Looks like I will either a) have to use it more often or b) change the gearbox to a ZF!

            Go for option A Peter....far more fun and much cheaper too..........although I personally think the ZF conversion makes such a difference and was a big factor in why I bought my particular car.

                Well for my previous owner it was not a big job as he had it done by Clive Tate so the only time he had his hands dirty was when he wrote the rather large cheque out..

                Its around £2K job done these days so that should help motivate youto use it more often....unless you have deep pockets......

                There have been lots of threads previously about this conversion but I guess it is fair to say that it would be a big job for most of us on here but some have successfully done it on a DIY baisis.
