Is the Triumph parts book wrong?

Just fitting a replacement Viscous Coupling ( the noise they make when they fail isunbelievable and frightening :shock

The official parts manual shows the bolts for the VC to the plastic fan going from the back of the VC, through the fan and having a spring washer, flat washer and nut on the front. Trouble is, this puts the end of the bolt and the nut frighteningly close to the rad

I see no reason why the bolts couldn't go the other way. Any thoughts anybody? and also wouldn't it be better using a nyloc nut rather than spring washer and flat nut?

    Cheers

as long as there is clearance it wouldnt be a problem, BUT you are aware that a nyloc is longer than a standard full nut and if fitted, spring washers will not be required but flat washers are there for a reason to spread loads evenly and equally distribute torsional loads applied on tightening nut/bolt this stops pick up and damage and assures correct torque settings.

i think there may be a fundemental fault here with clearances and would recheck to see the rad is not set back or out of plumb from previous owners work etc.

my clearance to blades from rad is 5mm:shock:but this is because i have an uprated rad with an extra core.i intend to address this .is it likely you have the same..............

From reading your post my v.c has studs not nuts and bolts. is this normal or is it some sort of "it fits so i will use it" replacement. Also how many channels are there in a standard radiator? mine is 4 deep and the fan has hit it at some time.
I have been toying with the idea of getting an aluminum cored radiator from the scrap yard of a similar size and the same outlets and using this. has anyone tried this and if so which one fits?

        Hi Steve

I was still planning to use flat washers if I went with the nylocs and, if the bolt points backwards then there is no clearance problem. Thanks for the point about checking clearances although I guess it'll probably ok, it's just that it looks pretty close and I was worried about damaging the rad whenever I put it in, or take it out

Marcusclive - You're not wrong !- early cars (up to engine LF23070) had studs with nut and bolts on later ones. I don't know about your other points but I'm sure someone else will

three cores in a standard red I believe.

My three core rad set up has the VC with the nuts on the rad side. No probs with clearance on mine. I guess the 4 core rad is a bit deeper, reducing the clearance.

            Rgds

              Thanks Andy & Dave

Now I've looked again, I don't think I've really got too much of a clearance problem, it's just that I'm worried about damaging the rad as I put it in.

              Cheers
