And, without wishing to pinch your post Len, whilsteveryone's got their Overdrive thinking caps on, can I ask about mine as well ?

It works fine until it's warm and then it usually kicks out of overdrive - only to return to normal when it cools down. I've bypassed the entire switch / gear lever loom to rule them out of the equation.

I thinkit's only played up since I checked the gearbox oil level and had todrain a little (a few tablespoons) :?

Sounds a lot like low oil pressure to me, especially if it gets worse as the oil heats and thins. I would try removing the bottom plate(J type) or big brass plug (A type) and check the filter inside. If that doesnt cure it it will probably need a strip down

Hi, In the J type there is also a pressure filter. Remove the sump plate, suction strainer and above that is acess to the pressure filter. It is the biggest of the 3 plugs but requires a pin wrench to undo it.

          Cheers Ian A

My first Stag was an Auto and I originally wanted an Auto this time but when I saw my current one, I just had to have it.

Only after I bought it did I realise the difference in gearingfigures for man v auto and - after years of modern cars with anything up to 33 mph/1000 rpm - I'm grateful for the higher overall gearing of the 6 speed ( ) manual box. (I suppose I can only really claim 5 spd as O/D 3rd is just about the same ratio as direct 4th)

Besides, my daily transport is a 6spd auto, so my left leg needs a bit of exercise

Thanks to Neil and Ian for your suggestions.

              Cheers

Just out of interest, did you know that the Viper does about 58mph per 1000 - true. Martin.

                  Morning Len,

I did have this problem with mine, when i bought it in January last year the overdrive worked fine but as the weather warmed up it got progresivley worse untill eventually it refused to engage entirley. After dismantling i found that the 'O'rings on the operating pistons were not there. I suppose while the oil was really cold it was thick enough to push the pistons but as the weather warmed up it became too thin.

                    Hello folks

I need to delve into the overdrive, (J type) but have been putting it off for want of a socket or wrench to undo the various plugs. Thanks to one of the posts here I now know it is called a pin wrench. I have found several adjustable types which seem to be recommended for removing discs on sanders etc eg: http://www.tooled-up.com/Product.asp?PID=27555 Anyone know if this is suitable/sufficient?

Hi Brian, I made mine. The head is a piece of16mm sq bar 28 mm long. the pins are 4.72mm diameter protruding 6.4mm from the sq block which they are pressed into. The pins are at 16mm centres. I then welded a small 3/8 drive socket on to the back edge of the bar so i could drive it with that. The ends of the bar are turned (rounded) in the lathe. I can't remember if this is required as it is a long time since it was used.

                          Cheers Ian A

                            And good morning.

All three are the same size, as the workshop manual refers to tool L354 for each of them.
