This brings us to another point, what if you have your Stag serviced or repaired bythe guy that lives round the corner, who does it as a part time money earner with no insurance, and damages your Stag or even worse does a bad repair that causes an accidentwho is going to foot the costs.

I know of one case involving a friend who had the guy round the corner service his old Rover, the guy was involved in a minor accident when he took it for a road test, the guy had no insurance, he had no money to pay for the repairs to his Rover and was taken to court by the car he hit insurance company and fine and points on his licence for no insurance, all very good but did not help my friend get his car repaired, but at least he didn't have to pay for the service.
good point, anyone carrying out work for profit on a car should have some form of public liability insurance policy in place, if your car is stolen, damaged, catches fire etc etc who is going to pay? because your insurance company won't.

Yes, true, but if you know the individual has no insurance (or suspect it or don't confirm) then it's your risk. Consumer law and the consumer credit act is a minefield with so many grey areas. Witnesses to conversations are ok but generally only if you can produce notes of the conversation. How do you prove / disprove you took them at the time?

My view is that Chris took in a part for repair and asked for a certain repair to be done. This work was completed as agreed but highlighted another flaw. The option for further work was offered and declined. Payment for work completed as agreed is (and was) payable. I think that was fair although the circumstances under which all this occurred may be questionable from a customer service perspective.
