    National Day Concours

Received my info pack for National Weekend and noticed that there will be no concours due to lack of entries. Must be a first in the history of the SOC.

There is a public vote for car of the show by the look of it...so those that did enter for the concours will they all be on display just for the public vote? What about modified car class, is that cancelled as well?

I must admit I have noticed a decline in recent years for concours entries, I can remember when the concours was over flowing with cars with different classes for Original Mark 1, Original Mark 2, show class, modified.

Is this a general trend in the classic car movement, or just Stags.....?

    :?

I heard a murmur that there were only two entries to the Concours this year. (Only a murmur though).

Some pretty outrageous cars have won in the past few years, including a converted LHD covered in non standard parts, in a non-standard colour with non-standard wheels, a nice guy, and a nice car, but given the above, I can't say I'm surprised at the lack of enthusiasm. That monstrous Chevvy engined car won a special award, nicely executed, but as much a Stag as I am ! It's time the National Committee laid down some ground rules, most other classic car clubs do, it engenderes pride in the marque and raises standards. I've seen a beautiful E Type running an RV8, but I can't see it winning prizes at a Jaguar event. I agree there should be a section for modified cars, some are very impressive.
However much people like going faster, or demonstrating their technical ability, the more you move away from the original, the less credibility the model has. It's the
start of the rot my friends! (speech over) Martin.

The fact here is that we only had 2 entries for ages and had a third towards the end.The next problem was that there was One Mk1, One Mk2 and One modified, obviously no competition there . That is why we have introduced a car of the day which will be open to all and that will be judged independently. We will invite all entries however to display their cars in the main area.
We are trying to encourage modified Stags to display together, as in my other post, as this will draw some interest to see what mods can be done.

Hi Bob, as an organiser you've obviously done the only sensible thing, but I firmly believe that owners are discouraged from entering by what has gone before. Last years winner at Uttoxeter was a cracker, but it was an exception.
The modified cars unquestionably have an important place, and if that's the way that SOC is moving then so be it.
We've seen Lotus Elans with Zetec engines, MGBs with K series engines, Mk1 Healey Sprites with fibreglass fronts, but all they do is highlight and exaggerate the shortcomings of the original ! I love my Stag, warts and all and I 'd as soon fit an injected RV8 as holiday in Helmand Province !

I know what you are saying Martin and I agree, it's always good to preserve the originality of the car. My own car for instance is original TV8 and I have no intention of changing that, but if there are more modern accessories, parts etc. like Steve's water pump andheader tanks to make it more reliable I'm all for it if the car is to be used and not justshown.
Back in 2001 my car was entered for concours at Harrogate, it came 2nd out of 8 entries, it had to go into modernised (not modified) because it had a S/S exhaust and luminition. Also if a car was entered as original with a S/S exhaust and not mild steel you got 0 outof 10 points, there has to be a limit somewhere.
All I can do is ask members for their participation and join in, if they do not come forward then I cannot invent a competition.

Completely agree about upgrades, I've got a SS exhaust, Cobra ignition, ali rad, some poly bushes and so on, and you're right, there has to be a line somewhere, it just seems to me that it's been allowed to drift a bit far. If you thought there was even a hint of criticism I apologise, you're doing a stirling job. Martin.

i think a contest titled ' car i would most like in my garage' standard , modified, whatever it would be a vote from the massed crowd and would be open to all cars and opinions, most vote wins!

I think it just goes to show that us Stag owners drive their cars and don't keep them wrapped up in Cotton wool only to be dragged out on the odd occasion for a Concours competition. You can't keep a frequently used car that good!
