    Temprature

Hi, Im a new stag owner,

i've just done both of mt head gaskets, fitted a new super s grill radiator, summer thermostat and an electric fan.

What would the a normal temprature reading in this weather, because mine fluctuates from half to 3 quarters and in traffic it stays on half without the fan kicking in.

There will be lot of feedback on this one, but my experience is that normal condition the TEMP gauge is on the E (1/4on the gauge) that is running with the viscous fan. I have an auxiliary electric fan that kicks in just above M but i have never got the engine temp near there yet, have to test the fan manually just to make sure it is still working.

There has been a lot of debate over the Temp sender and the general consensus is that he LD parts sensor is the best and most accurate so worth making sure you have an accurate sensor before you do any further investigation.

    Hope that helps

    Gary

thanks.i did put a new sensor on i got it from winns i do have a viscous fan, my electric fans set between half and 3/4 i tried it out the other day it was really hot out and the electric fan was kicking in even on a run but did switch on and off i also tried it sitting in heavy traffic on the same day and the temp was just over the half, i then took it out at night for an hour on a constant run and it went from half to just over and back the electric fan didnt come on once

        please note
A lean fuel mixture will overheat your stag quickly, also, so be sure you are not running lean
There is a lot of misinformation about ignition timing and cooling. Retarded timing contributes to overheating

I would reiterate Gary's suggestion regarding the temp sender..... replace with the one available from LDpart and you willensure that the temp gauge doesn't cause you to get excited when there isn't a problem.

...even better fit a capillary so you know what the real temparature is. You might have your fan cutting in needlessly.

Fair point.... i was thinking that a sender change would be a particularly low-cost item to go for before embarking on further, perhaps unnecessary, investigations

It wasn't a dig Andy, I know there are a lot of LD sensor "fans" out there, and I get shot down for this each time but after 20yrs with the standard guage and different sensors etc, all I've learnt is that N means nothing. So I concluded if temperature is that important (and we all seem to worry about it) then find out what it really is. The capillary gives me confidence, still have the electrical as well for quick visual!

                Cheers

Hello I fitted the new temp switch today and tried it out it was 22 on my garden thermometer I was out driving for 1 hr and it stayed a tiny bit over the half (dont have numbers on my gauge) I also found a heavy traffic jam to sit in towards the end and after sitting in it for 10 mins the needle did rise slightly and then my electric fan kicked in and it went down to half. What do you think acceptable?. I need to fit new carb needles as it smells when idling and on an old invoice it says carbs stripped floats adjusted and cleaned re assembled with new gaskets needs new jet needles as couldn't get co to less than 7.0. Any info on how to do this would be appreciated guys thanks

I have just replaced my sender with an LD one as the gauge was reading three quarters but it made no difference so I tried the voltage regulator instead and that fixed it. Shame I didnt try it that way round first as I had a spare voltage regulator in the shed

Voltage regulator is attached to the back of the speedo, dark green and light green wires. It also affects the fuel gauge so if that is reading too high it will drop that too.

Both my gauges dropped about one quarter of the scale when I changed it
