how do you know when your water pump needs replacing, mine isnt leaking but my temp does rise slightly when driving

It usually lets you know by dumping a load of coolant into the vee from the vent in the casing under the pump housing.
Alternatively (and this is potentially serious) the drive gear between pump and jackshaft fails and the pump stops, but the result is serious overheating and loss of coolant through the expansion bottle.
Either way you would know about it. If all is dry, then the pump is fine. Reading your other thread I would suggest another sender, preferably the one from www.ldpart.co.uk I have fitted a couple recently. One to a Stag with the same symptoms as yours and the guage is now stable. The other I fitted to my Stag and the temp needle sits on the 'E', a few degrees lower than the old sender and more in line with readings taken with a IR thermometer.
