Fitting new cam cover gaskets

You can use glue and you will certainly find that it helps to reduce weaping leaks. You need to use an oil and temperature resistant RTV type silicone sealant such as ebay item #170506683441. Make sure that the gaskets fit within the raised sections on the inner edge of the cam covers, if you find you have to squeeze them in and they keep popping out you'll have a helluva job getting them to stay in when you're tightening the covers down and it will be hard to get a good seal. After my first attempts failed and I ended up with distored gaskets I bought another set and trimmed them gently so that they sat into the cam covers with no persuasion required. I then bonded them to the covers with a light bead of that RTV and when it had cured put another small bead around the bottom and fitted them losely to the heads until they had cured, then tightened them. If you do it this way you'll ensure that the covers don't spread under the pressure of tightening as the RTV will hold them in place and you'll get a good seal. Also a good idea to use a little of it around the half moon rubbers at either end. The RTV dries to a rubbery type compound which is easy to remove so it will do no harm.

Use gasket sealant such as Wellseal to stick the cork gasket to the cam cover. Then just smear the other face of the gasket with multi-purpose grease. The same stuff this is probably in your grease gun. This allows the gasket to sit easily and seal. It also allows it to come off again without tearing (so it can be reused) if you need to remove the cover.

Hi there,
Justdid what DJT said except I used blue (non-setting) Hylomar to stick the gasket to the lid and a smear only on the face of the head. Took it for a fast run last night and no leaks at all. I've done it before and the covers come off quite easily leaving the gasket in the lid.
Hylomar is £3.59 a tube from Motosave, and I used a full tube and a little bit from the other tube.
hope this helps,
Peter

Some gaskets around seem to be porus:shock:
I could see daylight through one before it was compressed...best not to have holy gaskets really.
I have found evo-stick and pegs worked, but needed tobe left a while to go off.
I never tried grease, sounds like a good Idea.... normallyI use dirko.
