I've got exactly the same switch, although mine is situated on the other side below the temp gauge. It has a brown wire going to the back of the stereo but doesn't seem to do anything. I wondered if it was for an electric aeria that might have been previously fitted perhaps. It certainly doesn't seem to do anything now.
Interesting, I also had one of those, but the wires had been cut and I didn't find any trace of them when I had the dash out.
My 1973, 'Rover/Triumph showroom fitted options' catalogue dives straight in with extra lights, Rear Fog, Quartz Halogen 'Square 8' fog and driving, Tungsten fog and driving, Quartz Halogen fog and driving.
To be legal a warning light was(is) required.
A showroom fitted option would explain the identical switches and fitting positions.
What we really need is an owner who has had extra lights from new, to tell us about the switches.
Exactly where your pull switch is located my car has a rocker switch & light which works the two extra below bumper rear fog lights that the previous owner had had fitted.
i have 2 switches there, for mt fog lights, the rear ones are connected to one very similar o yours, with an orange led? and another with no led for the fronts fogs although i think this is a replacement switch.

thanks ben
I doubt that they were a factory add on when they are listed in the Showroom fitted options catalogue for Stag and Rover, issued by Jaguar and Rover Triumph Parts and Accessories. Not dated but with an M reg showing on the cover.
All the illustrated lamps appear to be branded Lucas but there are a few pages for Unipart Car Care Products
The overall illustration shows that it is from a far distant time as the spotlights on the Rover pick out the attractive girl thumbing for a lift. The heading..There are many occasions when extra lights are useful.
