    Stag vs SL Merc R107

    Hi All

Good article in the practical classic comparing these 2 cars and also both cars featured in this months classic car mart.

I like both cars and wondered if anyone has driven both cars on here?

Do you think the Merc would be better than the Stag as a daily driver or would its soulless nature (according to PC) make it to mundane?

Stuart I don't think the soulless nature of the Merc is the issue. It is more the fact that you everyone would think you were either a hairdresser...or an ageing "lady who lunches".

Hi stuart. Iowned a 1985 500 SL between stags, good solid car ,fuel pump£1000,engine £5000, so you have to buy a good one.great open top motoringwith the windows down and not a lot of bufferting with windows and deflector up.but not as quirky as a SNAG?

Have to agree there, not to mention complexity and parts costs. Martin.

My aunt had owned her Stag for several years when her husband bought her a 350SL as a surprise birthday present to replace the Stag, as he assumed she would like to upgrade to a newer car. He was wrong. After driving the Merc around for a day or two it was sent back as she preferred the Stag and wanted to keep it. She told me the Merc was very nice but " too heavy and had no soul" compared to the Stag. Shedrove that Stag for 32 years in the end and never tired of it.

Now that is an answer to my question no contest then, both your aunt and PC have said the Stag is better because of having more soul.

My aunt is now 79 and in residential care, and I have had her Stag now for about 5 years. I see her several times a week and virtually every visit she asks me if I'm taking care of it and tells me it's the best car she ever had, and she's had some interesting ones in her time, including a Fiat 850 Sport, Fiat 124 sport and a fantastic red Lotus Elan (the early type with pop up lights). If only she'd kept them all! I've recently been through all her old photos and found pics of them all - I'll post them up soon as they are cracking looking cars - and all too rare now. Also found a few pics of the Stag when it must have been quite young (but already repainted Aero Silver which she did when it was around a year old), as it originally had steel wheels.

That Fiat 850 sport was a little cracker ! I've driven a few, and you would never guess it was only 850cc, and what a looker ! Martin.

I agree Martin, fantastic lines. My aunt's was white with red upholstery - absolutely beautiful - I'll dig out the pics and post some when I get a mo.

My sister had me look at a few of those back in the '80s and I kept warning her about the rust. So she bought one when I was away at sea! It actually had some metal holding some of the rust together, which probably accounted for the nice new (bent) MOT

Bloody thing didn't half shift though for a tiny motor

Cost her a fortune in Isopon and bits of aluminium gauzebefore we got shot of it!
