    May be a silly question, but what should a shaft measure in the thickness? This should be the next step rather than an alternative bush. I know LDPart have them in stock and they are original stock. If my battery is OK in my micrometer, I will measure my pump shaft and let you know if its different to yours. My micrometer is the same make as yours so should be in line.

      Just measured a couple of waterpumps I've got in the garage. Ones OEM new, the other arebuild. Both measure .5512"on my (none digital) micrometer. That's near enough to your 14mm.

      Don't think wear on the waterpump shaft's an issue.

        I get .561.5" so like you say it eliminates the shaft

          I've also just found the bush.It's still in it's packet and it has a split, so it looks like that correct as well.

            Hi
            Think the problem is now solved! The knocking has now stopped but now I need to reset the camshafts as there is some tapping coming from one or three lobes.(Joy!)
            I think installing the bush so it was knocked down as far as possible into the block solved the problem as when I checked the bush with a spare pump shaft the play was greatly reduced (must have really mangled it!)

            Also I moved the car under it's own power for the first time in three years, albeit only ten feet! Many thanks to all who contributed to this post.
            Attached is an image of (nearly completed engine bay.
            I might even get it on the road this summer!

                  If my Stag's engine bay was like Glen's, I would have a bonnet like this one.
